Lance Armstrong Wimps Out of Doing Leadville 100

December 29th, 2006

According to a VeloNews article, Lance Armstrong announced yesterday that he has a scheduling conflict and won’t be doing the Leadville 100. Go Clipless thinks he’s just afraid that Floyd Landis will beat him. I think he may be right.

Maybe he should give the Durango 100 a try instead and take on a real challenge. The record finish time at the Durango 100 is 9:11 and that was before they added even more vertical. They’ve been offering a $500 bonus to the first person to break 9 hours. I know $500 isn’t anything to Lance but proving he can go under 9 hours there should be.

Of course it’s still questionable whether Landis can do the race because of his doping problems from the 2006 Tour de France. As I’ve said before, I don’t think he was doping with testosterone. I think most of the pros are using something banned and maybe Landis is too. There’s enough strangeness about his positive testosterone test to believe that it was valid.

More Views of the Holiday Blizzard of 2006

December 22nd, 2006

The Gazette has posted some good pictures sent in by readers of the blizzard (photos no longer on site). The picture above is one of them and I’m not sure what part of town it was taken in. I’d guess it had to be in the north or northeast. The Westside near Manitou where my parents live barely even got snow.

Holiday Blizzard of 2006

December 21st, 2006

The media is calling our snowstorm the Holiday Blizzard of 2006. If the wind hadn’t been blowing 30-40 mph yesterday, I think it would have just been a nice snow storm. Last night on the news they said Colorado Springs got 5-9 inches of snow with up to 18 inches to the north and east. At my house we might have had 3 inches on the sidewalk but when I shoveled it this morning it felt like twice that much because it was so wind packed.

Yesterday I waited to leave work until 4 PM in hopes the traffic would clear out. Academy Boulevard was still just a parking lot so I tried a couple different ways through neighborhoods until I was able to get to Woodmen Road. A lot of the time I could only see about 2-3 car lengths because of the blowing snow.

A lot of people were driving with their emergency flashers on which was good because it was a big help in seeing them. There were lots of abandoned cars stuck in snow drifts. On Academy there were some that were just abandoned in the middle of the traffic lanes without flashers on. According to the news some people got tired of waiting in traffic jams and others ran out of gas from sitting so long. I-25 south bound wasn’t blocked off so I took that home but didn’t see anyone else on it.

Blizzard

December 20th, 2006

Yesterday the forecast was for 6-9 inches of snow. It was cloudy and cold but we only had a snow flurry that didn’t even get the ground white. This morning when I got up it was just starting to snow and the wind was blowing 30-40 mph. I’m not really sure how much it has snowed this morning because it’s blowing so much. The snow is in drifts with bare patches in between.

A little while ago an upper manager sent out this e-mail. “Team, with blizzard conditions and white out travel I encourage everyone to start home early, take your time and be careful. Thanks.” The only good way for me to get home is I-25. I live close to downtown Colorado Springs and as you can see from the image below, I-25 is closed for miles in both directions. There’s only one short way and several long ways to get from where I am to home without using I-25. From what I’ve heard, the traffic is a mess everywhere. I think I’ll stay at work until everybody else gets off the road or the conditions improve.

Armstrong versus Landis Confirmed In Press Release

December 19th, 2006

A press release today confirms that Floyd Landis plans to race the Leadville 100 in 2007. It says that race directory Ken Chlouber invited him to do the race. I’m still not sure what will happen if his doping issues aren’t cleared up by then since it is a NORBA sanctioned race.

My money is on Floyd Landis winning the race but I’m sure this will make Lance train harder. See my previous post about Lance’s attempts at mountain biking in 1999 after his first Tour de France win. Although I don’t consider Leadville to be technical, handling skills will still be a small factor. Landis started his career as a mountain biker and made the switch to the road in 1998. Armstrong has done a few races off-road and has better skills than most roadies but he won’t be able to hang with Landis going down the Powerline or Columbine. Plus when was the last time Lance did something on his own? Even at the New York Marathon he had other runners to pace him.

Thanks to Biking Bis for tracking down the press release.

Floyd Landis to Race Leadville 100

December 18th, 2006

Steve Siguaw, who is the moderator for the Leadville 100 list and helps maintain the Leadville 100 website, just posted that not only is Lance Armstrong planning to do the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race but Floyd Landis is too! He said Merilee confirmed it for both Lance and Floyd. I’m not sure what impact Floyd’s doping problems will have since it is NORBA sanctioned.

As I posted when the Floyd’s positive test was first leaked, I think most of the top pros dope. I still find it strange though that he would get caught for testosterone since it’s well understood and has been used for doping for a long time. There also seems to have been a lot of sloppiness by the French lab.

Race Across America Changes

December 14th, 2006

As I posted a couple weeks ago, Fred Boethling and John Hughes have taken over RAAM. They haven’t wasted any time changing the Enduro rules and appointing people to several positions. Jeff Stephens of Stephens Performance Marketing has been appointed to be the Sales and Marketing Director for RAAM. Jeff has 20 years of marketing with American Lung Association and American Heart Association. Hopefully he’ll be able to bring more exposure to RAAM and increase sponsorship.

The Enduro rules have been changed to not have any mandatory control points. Racers will be required to take a minimum of 10 hours off the bike in the first 1,000 miles and another 10 hours in the last 1,000 miles. The total off bike time required remains 40 hours.

This year we were required to take a minimum of 2 hours off the bike at 5 control points. I only made it past the first 3 but 2 of them totally threw my sleep off. I was required to stop when I didn’t feel I needed to since it was daylight. After stopping I tried to ride through the night since I’d already slept but kept falling asleep on the bike. I had posted a response on the Topica ultracycling list last week saying I thought the change was good. Paul Skilbeck that was the RAAM media director responded that he thought it was a bad idea because the media knew at least 5 spots along the race where riders would be stopped. I agree there has to be a balance between getting media exposure to help the race survive and not hindering the racers.

McSweeny Scholarship Fund

December 10th, 2006

I’ve been really slow getting this posted but the UMCA has set up a scholarship fund in honor of Anne Marie McSweeny. The Anne Marie McSweeney scholarship fund will provide scholarships to women cyclists to attend any one of three PAC Tour camps. The scholarship fund is administered by the UMCA and contributions to fund are tax-deductible. The deadline for applications is December 15, 2006.

The PAC Tour camps are

  • Arizona Coaching Camp March 3-10, 2007
  • Arizona Women’s Camp April 8-15, 2007
  • Wisconsin Coaching Camp (not offered in 2007)

PAC Tour (Pacific-Atlantic-Cycling Tour) was started in 1985 by cross country record holders Susan Notorangelo and Lon Haldeman. Although I’ve heard about Lon for years, I first met him this year at RAAM. He and his daughter were manning the RAAM control point in Cortez, CO when I went through there during my RAAM attempt this year. He’s in Peru now helping out poor people in various ways. One of the things he’s done is deliver books to schools in remote villages. The books where bought from the sale of Anne Marie McSweeney bikes. In one of his recent posts, he talks about how he got back his stolen camera with pictures of children at an orphanage he had visited. It involved sitting in the doorway of a restaurant with a 12 inch metal file in his lap.

I’ve never been to any PAC Tour events but I’ve heard really good things about them. I’d like to do one of their long tours sometime. Doing week long of longer camps or tours is a great way to get really fit. The best thing I did training for RAAM was to go to Texas Hellweek.

Observations of Gym Rats

December 8th, 2006

Last night I went to the gym for the first time since last February or March. I went because it was cold out and more importantly I had a stiff neck and could barely turn my head to the left. I don’t feel safe riding my bike when I can’t keep track of what’s going on around me.

I spent 50 minutes on the stair machine. I’m not talking about the stair steppers that you can easily pretend to be working out but not really doing much. I use the machine that is basically a few steps of a down escalator. If you can’t keep up, you get farther from the controls and you could dropped on the floor. I would much rather do the old Manitou Incline. At least then I can see that I’ve gone somewhere and the surroundings are pretty.

The stair machines are along the wall so you can see most of the gym. I made some observations about the people there broken down by gender.

I’ll start with the 3 types of women I noticed.

  1. Very Fit and Generally Good Looking. It appeared staying fit was very important to them. Maybe they were also doing it for looks.
  2. Skinny but Didn’t Look Fit. I couldn’t decide if they were at the gym to do a minimal workout to keep from wasting away or if they were trying to burn calories so they would waste away.
  3. Overweight and Not Fit. I figured they were there in an attempt to lose weight but they’ll probably lose motivation soon.

I also came up with a list of 3 types for men. For this list I spent a tiny fraction of the time I spent making observations for the types of women.

  1. Generally Fit. They looked like they were fit from other activities or sports and were just trying to get some exercise on a cold day.
  2. Serious Iron Pumpers. These guys don’t seem to care about anything but adding more muscle. They don’t mind a little fat either as long as it makes them bigger.
  3. Fat and Out of Shape. I’m not sure why they were there other than to lose some weight or maybe not get injured with the start of ski season.

Unfortunately if someone else was making these observations, they’d probably put me in the 3rd group of men. I’ve gained back all the weight I lost training for RAAM and I really need to quit drinking so much sugar. My BMI is exactly 30 which is the boundary between being merely overweight and obese. Of course I don’t think it accounts for having much muscle.

Genetically I’d be good for the 2nd group. Even in high school when I was skinny compared to now, the guys at the local bike shop would always tell me I should be a body builder instead of a cyclist. I hate lifting weights and want to be outside so I never considered making the switch.

Right now my focus is to build my base fitness and reverse the slope of my weight. Normally December is when I get motivated for the following season and I’ve found myself thinking a lot more about cycling and working out the last couple weeks. I have a list of races in my head of races I’m interested in doing next year. I won’t be able to do them all but I have plenty of time to figure out which ones to do. Most of them are mountain bike races. Right now I just need to focus on getting in some consistent training.
