Anyone can enter the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike race. Because it’s so popular, entries are picked in a lottery. Entry forms must be submitted by January 31st to be entered into the lottery. Entry confirmations are e-mailed about a week later and unsuccessful entries are returned.

The entry forms have been posted online the middle of December. Starting with 2010, entry is online only.

Leadville 100 MTB FAQ

January 20th, 2008

2007 Leadville 100 MTB Start

About this time every year, people start asking a lot of the same questions on the Yahoo Leadville 100 MTB group. Last year these questions were the motivation for a great article about preparing for your first ultra. Although it covers most of the common questions about Leadville, it may not be the best format for finding the answer to a specific question.

Nearly all the questions have many answers. It’s key to experiment during training to find what works for you and then stick to that on race day. My answers are based on racing the Leadville 100 6 times, crewing twice and just watching one year.

Here’s the outline for the questions I’ll be answering. I’ll add links here as I write the posts. Feel free to suggest more questions. Also feel free to add your comments on the answers.

  • How do I enter?
  • How does the entry lottery work?
  • How to train?
  • What to eat during rides?
  • What Equipment?
    • Best Bike?
    • Which tires?
    • Disc brakes or V-brakes?
  • What’s the course like?
  • How about the altitude?
  • Where to stay?
  • Race day questions
    • How do I get my best finish time?
    • When should I get to the start line?
    • What do I do with drop bags?
    • What to wear?
    • What should I carry with me?
    • How about the congestion on St. Kevins?
    • What are the aid stations like?
    • Will I finish?
    • Music or No Music?

The Cost of Being Able to Breathe Well

January 19th, 2008

I’ve had trouble with allergies and asthma ever since I got mono when I was in college. The doctor I had then thought I just had a sinus infection and told me I could train and race. I did an 80 mile road race and couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t recover.

A few years ago my asthma and allergy doctor said I’d be a good candidate for a new medication called Xolair. I was already getting allergy shots, taking pills and using 5 inhalers. They said Xolair was really expensive but they thought it was likely they get my insurance to approve it. Somehow I didn’t feel right taking an expensive drug mainly so I could ride better.

A couple years later in June of 2005, I was doing one of the RMCC 400k brevets. We rode by a hay field that had just been mowed. I felt my lungs tighten. Just after that we went by another hay field where they were mowing. My breathing became worse.

I had made the critical mistake of forgetting my inhaler. I struggled through the last 80 miles of the ride. I ended up going to the ER after I finished because even sitting in a chair I had to think about every breath. My peak flow, which is a measure of how well you can exhale, was only 30% of predicted at the ER. Even when I feel I’m breathing well, I’m only 80% of what is predicted for non-athletes. Athletes are typically 120-130% of predicted.

After that I decided to find out more about Xolair. It was no longer about just riding better. It was about being able to breathe. A blood test is used to determine if your body produces too much IgE. The IgE level is used to determine the Xolair dose and insurance companies also use it to decide whether to cover it.

In my case, it was determined I needed one injection a month. My IgE level was high enough for my insurance to cover it. I only had to pay a $40 copay for a 3 month supply.

Since I’ve been taking Xolair, I have only had minor problems with my asthma. One of my big concerns about doing the Race Across America was that I’d have an asthma attack from some farmer mowing his hay field. I did have a little trouble breathing climbing out of the desert of Arizona but nothing too major. That was really the only time I had more than minor breathing problems during RAAM.

With my job change, it means new insurance. I had gotten a 3 month supply of Xolair not long before I quit so I hadn’t needed more. I need more for next month. Yesterday I got the news that the approved place to get Xolair charges $545 a shot. I have to pay a $1,000 deductible and then after that it’ll be $109 a shot. It’s not cheap but it’s better than not being able to breathe.

Entry Deadline for Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race

January 13th, 2008

Dave Wiens and Floyd Landis at Leadville 100 MTB Start

The deadline for entries to this year’s Leadville 100 mountain bike race is only a couple weeks away. They must be received by January 31st. The mail to Leadville isn’t very fast so I wouldn’t push it if you plan on entering. After watching other people suffer the last 3 years instead of racing it myself, I’m considering doing it again this year. If I do I don’t think I’ll be in shape to improve my best time of 8:18 but maybe I can break 9 hours and get another big buckle.

This year there hasn’t been the buzz that there was last year with the talk of a Floyd Landis and Lance Armstrong showdown. Landis lost his doping appeal and there haven’t been much about Armstrong doing it. Chris Carmichael did list one of Lance’s goals for 2008 as Complete an ultra-endurance cycling event. Of course some ultra cyclists took that to mean something like the Furnace Creek 508.

If you haven’t made up your mind and want to find out more about the race or if you’ve already mailed your entry form in and are waiting anxiously to find out if you make the lottery, here are some links. There’s nothing that will give you a feel for what it’s like being in the old gym with nearly a 1,000 other mountain bikers listening to Ken give his “You’re Better Than You Think You Are” speech.

Dragging This Week

January 10th, 2008

Cross Country Skiing in Rocky Mountain National Park

I’ve been meaning to write up about some of the cross country skiing I did over the New Years weekend. I’ve been really wiped out all week. I got a sore throat last week but really didn’t feel very sick otherwise except Sunday. My throat was so sore though that I had trouble sleeping a couple nights and got dehydrated one day because it hurt too much to swallow. It turns out that I had strep throat. The sore throat is pretty much gone but I need to catch up on sleep. Hopefully in the next couple days I’ll get some energy back.

How I’m Going to Lose 35 Pounds

January 9th, 2008

I’m currently 35 pounds over my competitive weight. I’ve been worried about being able to lose that much weight in time for races this summer. Now I found a video that explains how I can easily lose weight just by drinking enough beer! I’m a bit concerned about how well my speed and endurance will be though.

Happy 2008

January 5th, 2008

Another year has come and gone. The change of years doesn’t really mean that much to me. For the most part, New Years Day is just another day except that I don’t have to work. We were going to go see the fireworks when we were at Grand Lake but being asleep in a warm bed ended up sounding better than standing on a frozen lake at midnight in subzero weather.

2007 sucked the life out of me. I did too little riding and was too stressed at work. I still feel like I’m recovering from it. Going to Alaska was the highlight of the year.

I don’t believe in doing New Years resolutions. It takes being ready mentally and emotionally to make changes. I find that other events or just being the right time is when I can make changes. When I started my new job, I decided to break my pop drinking addiction. I did well for the first couple weeks and then with the holidays I didn’t do quite so well. I’m still drinking much less than I was before but don’t want to drink much at all.

My plan is to get back to racing in 2008. I haven’t figured out which races yet but I’m thinking mostly long mountain bike races with most likely at least one 100 miler and a 24 hour race. Some of the mountain bike races I’m thinking about are the Leadville 100, Breckenridge 100 and Montezuma’s Revenge. The Hoodoo 500 on the road also interests me. Which races I do will somewhat depend on how my fitness comes around. I think I can get fit but my weight will hold me back. I need to lose 35 pounds to get to my competitive weight.

I also want to keep improving the cycling and outdoor gear search part of this website. It’s far from how I’d like it to be. I plan to do another giveaway in couple months similar to the giveaway I did before Christmas. The graph above shows the traffic to that part of the website for the last year. Although I feel it could be improved a lot, there’s been a good increase in traffic.

Cabin Near Grand Lake
We made a 4 day weekend for New Years and went to the mountains near Grand Lake. I didn’t take the laptop and our cell phones didn’t have signal. The highways home were closed for 20 hours but we didn’t hear about it until they had been reopened. Sometimes it’s nice to be disconnected.
