Celebrate Winter on the Trails

You’ve been meaning to give snowshoeing or cross-country skiing a try. Now you have no excuse. Winter Trails Day, an initiative of Snowsports Industries America, features events across the country where children and adults can try these two sports for free.

In Colorado, check these out:

  • Outdoor event at Echo Lake near Mount Evans, sponsored by REI, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 9. Bring food, drink, and warm clothing. For more information on the program that will be offered, call the REI Denver Flagship store, 303-756-3100.
  • Free snowshoe rentals, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 10, at High Trail Sports, 1121 Dillon Dam Road, Frisco. For information, 970-668-3748.
  • Free afternoon snowshoe eco-tour (tour and rentals) at Keystone Resort Nordic Center, Elk Run Road, Jan. 9. For information, 970-496-4275.
  • Estes Park Winter Festival, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 16, Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. Free snowshoe trials, on-site information and a Challenge Clinic from the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. For information, 970-577-9900.
