Did I Jinx Myself?

October 27th, 2007

Last Monday the Fat Cyclist had a contest for when to use Laser Beams of Death. I commented

Assuming I hadn’t already used my LBOD on one of the other handful of rednecks that have threatened to intentionally run me over, I would have used it a couple years ago while I was riding in Vegas. I had gotten up early and ridden out to Red Rocks before I had to help set up the network for a conference.

It had been a great ride and I was headed back toward the strip. I was riding on a 6 lane road with a full traffic width bike lane. I was over half way over in the bike lane.

I was in my own world when I was struck in the back of the head. I was dazed but saw a bottle of water go bouncing with several ounces of water left in it. Then I saw the big, black Ford truck with a Go Fast sticker that was nearly as big as the tailgate. The passenger had the window down. I wan’t able to get the license plate number though.

The truck was probably going 50 mph but the light a block ahead was red. I started sprinting after them. I was going to at a minimum get the license number but hopefully get to yell at them and who knows what else I would have done.

Just as they were getting to the light with several stopped cars, the left turn arrow turned green. They whipped across 3 lanes of traffic and made the left turn and were gone. I had a headache most of the rest of the day but fortunately nothing worse. The bottle had hit my helmet. I think it would have been much worse if had hit my neck below my helmet. Had I had my LBOD they wouldn’t have been a menace to other cyclists.

Today I was riding near Grand Junction and someone threw a Pepsi bottle at me that had enough Pepsi left in it to really hurt. Fortunately they didn’t have as good of aim as the guy in Vegas.

I’ve had someone slow down and the passenger smack me on the butt, a firecracker shot into my rear tire, ice thrown at me, a pickup pull to the right of me in a gravel pullout and then slide and spray gravel at me. Fortunately I’ve only hit a car once and I haven’t had any serious injuries. Hopefully I’m not jinxing myself again. What things have you had done to you while you’ve been riding?

Below is a preview of my ride. I’ll get a ride report and more pictures posted in the next couple days.

Local Paper has Cyclocross Article

October 26th, 2007

Pikes Peak Velo Cyclocross
Thanks to a link from Mad Dog, I found that The Gazette, out local paper known for not covering cycling, has an article in today’s paper about cyclocross. Although the article is about cross in California, it does mention our upcoming race on November 18th. You can also look at my pictures from our September cyclocross race.

A Hint of Things to Come

October 23rd, 2007

Pikes Peak after Fall Snow
This fall has continued to be warm and dry. We hadn’t even had a freeze until Sunday. Saturday it was in the 70s. Sunday morning we woke up to snow. Danielle, our 4 year old, had looked out and saw the snow. We were being lazy laying in bed when she came and pegged me on the neck with a wet snowball.

At our house, we didn’t have more than an inch on the grass that melted once it quit snowing in the afternoon. We were at a friend’s house near Monument and it looked like they had at least 6 inches. I heard that Woodland Park got a foot. Fonk lives up above Manitou and posted some cool pictures of snow at his house. Out there posted a picture of snowy Manitou.

Today was a beautiful day in the 60s and I managed to head out at lunch for a lap through the Air Force Academy. Tomorrow it’s supposed to be back into the 70s. I’m going to have to try getting out at lunch again.

Memories of a Hiking Buddy

October 22nd, 2007

Kody on Peak to Peak Trail

I got Kody when he was a year old. He was a lab and husky mix. I always said he had the energy of a lab and the endurance of a husky. The people that had him couldn’t control him. If they tried taking him for a walk, he’d pull them over and run away.

It took me 8 months to get much control of him. I finally took him with me when I was climbing a couple mountains. Once we got above timberline, I let him off the leash. I figured I’d at least be able to see which way he went. I found that he did follow my general direction but would be up to a quarter mile away. He finally chased some mountain sheep and I just kept on hiking. He ended up with some cliffs between us. I finally went back to get him. When I got closer, I could hear him crying. After that he stuck closer to me.

In the last 10 years, I haven’t hiked very many times without him. He climbed mountains with me. He did up to 5 day backpacking trips and carried his own food and water. He loved snow and loved it when I went cross-country skiing. He was also a big part of our family as it grew.

The last year it has been obvious he was getting old. He still loved to hike but he was getting slower. If I didn’t have Danielle with me, I’d have to stop and wait for him on the Manitou Incline. For the last couple months, it hasn’t seemed like he could see very well. There were days when he was really irritable. Today we had to make the decision to have him put down. He’ll be missed

Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak Region Trails

October 21st, 2007

Barr Trail
Out There has launched a new trail resource for Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region. They’ve also included some trails from the surrounding area. We have more and better trails than even most people in Colorado realize.

They’ve taken the Happy Trails that have appeared on Fridays in the Out There section of the Gazette and made them searchable online. You can select by area or difficulty. According to their blog post you’re supposed to be able to select by specialty (biking, hiking with kids, cross country skiing, etc.) but I don’t see it as a choice. You can type those things in the trail search box and get matching trails. They have added topo maps and hope to eventually include GPS waypoints.

I believe one of the guys behind singletracks lives here although I’ve never met him. In any case there are a lot of the good local trails listed. It’s a mountain biking site but some of the information would be useful to hikers and runners.

Medicine Wheel has a few mountain biking trails online. They have a short description and include GPS file and maps made with TopoFusion.

MapMyRide and MapMyRun have GPS uploads of local trails too. The problem with most trails on MapMyRide and MapMyRun is they don’t really provide much information other than the GPS route.

Some other resources for hikes in the Pikes Peak region are Colorado Guy and LocalHikes. There’s also Trails.com. It’s a subscription site but you can sign up for a 2 week free trial.

Go Green, Save Money

October 15th, 2007

Today is the first annual Blog Action Day. The idea is that each year they’ll pick a topic for bloggers to write about. This year they pick the environment for the topic.

I started writing a post about the green movement a couple months ago before I knew about Blog Action Day. I never finished writing it. I started writing it after I’d seen yet another company using the green cause in its marketing. I no longer remember what it was for.

I recycle. My wife will throw an aluminum can in the trash because she just wants it out of the way and I’ll pull it out and put it in the recycle bin. I sometimes commute by bike although I should do it more often. My excuse is it isn’t far enough to count as good training but long enough that I need a shower. I feel bad driving my SUV and take our mini-van if my wife isn’t using it.

The thing that annoys me about green becoming popular is that now companies are using it in their marketing. There are very few cases where buying something is greener than not buying it. Just think about what you buy and just how much of it do you really need?

One thing that is green to buy is compact fluorescent light bulbs. Although they cost more, they last longer and save you a lot more than the extra cost. I have switched almost all of my bulbs to fluorescent. Some have said they aren’t better because they have mercury in them. Power plants spew out mercury when they burn coal so the electricity compact fluorescent bulbs save actually reduces the mercury. The best thing is to not throw them in the trash but to recycle them.

Another thing that is green to buy and save you money in the long run is a programmable thermostat. I like it cool when I sleep but warm when I get out of bed in the morning. We have the temperature automatically drop 5 degrees about the time we go to bed and then back to normal an hour before we get up. We used to drop the temperature during the day too but now that we have kids, Julie is normally home.

Some of the best ways to go green don’t cost and are easy to do. Things like recycling, water your lawn in morning or evening when it’s cooler, turn the water off when brushing your teeth and turn off lights. Oh, and if you don’t need it, don’t buy it.

Skiing Has Begun in Colorado

October 14th, 2007

Skiing at A-Basin

A-Basin opened on Wednesday making it the first ski area in the country to open. Dave from the out there blog was there and has posted some pictures. Even when I skied at ski areas, I never expected good snow until at least late December. I get enough of an adrenaline rush mountain biking to not need to go ski on icy, man made snow.

Puma Lift at Ski CooperWith the temperatures here mainly in the 70’s and 80’s the last couple weeks, I haven’t even really been thinking about skiing. Today has been colder and there’s a chance of rain or snow tonight. My 4 year-old has already been asking to go skiing. We took her for her birthday last spring. I cross country skied while she was in her class. After her class they let me take her up the Puma lift on the bunny slope. That was a bit of a challenge especially since I had my cross country skis.

Skiing Near the Eiseman HutLast year I went skiing at a ski area for the first time in over 10 years. The conditions weren’t good and I got injured. I think I should just stick to skiing in the backcountry. I really don’t enjoy skiing at ski areas any more but I do like to in the backcountry. It’s really as much about being in the backcountry as it is about skiing.

Update 10/15/07: Loveland got over a foot of snow over the weekend and is opening tomorrow.

Playing in Red Rocks Open Space

October 10th, 2007

Pond at Red Rocks Open Space

Red Rocks Open Space is one of our newer open spaces right at the edge of town. There’s some great stuff there for hikers, mountain bikers and rock climbers.

With the Intemann Connector, it’s easy to make some great loops. My favorite trail for descending is the Sand Canyon Trail. The lower trails especially around the ponds and the quarry are pretty busy with hikers. I don’t see many hikers around the old landfill or on the Sand Canyon Trail. Red Rocks seems to have gotten pretty popular with rock climbers too. Of course there’s also the free ride area near the parking lots off Highway 24.

Red Rocks Open Space QuarrySaturday I rode over to Red Rocks Open Space. I let the kids play in the pond for a while and then rode up to the quarry. The kids got out and climbed up the stairs cut into the rock and I dragged the trailer up into the quarry. The kids played around in the rocks there.

Danielle wanted me to ride around more but Cassidy hates bumps when she’s in the trailer. Just going back down the Greenlee trail had her screaming. It made it worse since she was really tired. Both her and Danielle fell asleep soon after we left the open space and slept the 7 miles home.

Fallen Cottonwood Tree in Monument Valley ParkIt was windy and had been during the night. The Burley really catches the wind but it was manageable. A big cottonwood tree had fallen down in Monument Valley Park right by the trail. It missed most of the trail with the way it fell but I still wouldn’t wanted to have been close when it came down.

Sinus Infection Prevention

October 7th, 2007

Sinus Rinse

It’s fall and we’re heading into the cold part of the year. At least here in Colorado, sinus infection are common with cyclists during this time of year. I’m not sure exactly why but I think it was to do with the really dry, cold air and breathing hard while training. It’s also when we get more colds and try training too much before we get over them. My non-active co-workers also are more likely to have sinus infections during the winter too but not as bad as cyclists.

For the last several years, I haven’t made it through a winter without being on antibiotics at least once for a sinus infection. Not only do I have bad summer time allergies but I’m also allergic to molds and dust. I have some congestion most of the time which contributes to my sinus problems.

With my extra job stress this year, I’ve been on antibiotics 4 times for sinus infections. The last time was about 2 months ago. The biggest thing that makes it hard for me to train while on antibiotics is that it messes my stomach up. That makes it hard to eat enough on long rides and can cause a bonk. Eating yogurt and taking iFlora or Digest Caps really helps my stomach.

This last time I was on pretty strong antibiotics for 18 days. Within a week of finishing the antibiotics, I was feeling like I had a sinus infection again. I was doing everything that I know to do. I was taking antihistamines, using nasal spray and Mucinex.

When I was in to my asthma and allergy doctor’s office to get my allergy shot, I told them I was having trouble again. They said I really should be using the Sinus Rinse. A couple years ago they had tried getting me to use it too and had given me a free one.

I had never used it. You use it to spray a saline solution up one nostril and let it run out the other side. That just didn’t seem pleasant to me. My dad had been using it for a while and had told me it doesn’t feel that bad and had really helped him.

They gave me another one even though I told them I still had the other one. I figured I’d give it a try to try to avoid taking more antibiotics. It ended up not feeling bad at all and I got a lot of crud out of my nose. The key is to bend over enough so the solution doesn’t run down your throat. I’ve also found when I’m really stuffed up it helps to take a really deep breath and hold it while squirting the solution up my nose.

Even after using it once, my sinuses felt better. After a couple more days of using it, my sinuses felt fine. I used it for a couple weeks and then felt well enough and quit using it. After several days, my sinuses started bothering me again. I guess I need to use it every few days to keep things cleared out.

According to the list on the website of places to buy the Sinus Rinse, it should be easy to find at a drug or grocery store. My free one only came with 5 packets for making the solution but I think the ones in the store come with 50 packets. I bought a box of 100 packets at Walgreens once the ones that came with mine ran out.
