Assault on the Peak in 3D

February 14th, 2011

The inaugural Assault on the Peak, the bike ride from Manitou Springs to the summit of Pikes Peak, was filmed in 3D by Convergent Design. I talked to the 2 guys shooting the video briefly at Crystal Reservoir. They said they were shooting it to show off some 3D capability which I’m guessing is their nano3D product.

I don’t have any 3D glasses laying around so I’m not sure how it looks in 3D. If you have some blue and red 3D glasses, take a look at it and leave a comment below with your thoughts.

Unfortunately it doesn’t look they got any footage from above timberline. In the version I embedded above, Peak Region Cyclist added in a few still photos.

Registration for the 2011 Assault on the Peak opens tomorrow and has a reduced entry price of $150 through April 30th. After that it will be $180 and day of ride registration will be $200.

Ride the Divide Movie Continues to be Shown

February 9th, 2011

The Ride the Divide movie of the 2008 Tour Divide continues to be shown across the country. It was shown here in Colorado Springs in September. I wrote a review of Ride the Divide after I saw it in September.

It’s coming back to the big screen here again this Thursday evening. Once again it’ll be at Stargazers Theatre at 7 PM. All the details here. A list of screenings for other parts of the country is on the Ride the Divide website.

This Colorado Springs showing is a fundraiser for Medicine Wheel. Medicine Wheel is a huge part of why we have access to so many mountain bike trails and very few trails have been closed to bikes.

At the Ride the Divide movie showing Thursday night Medicine Wheel will discussing their plans for building what they’re calling Lake Moraine – Missing Link trail until it’s formally named by the city. The trail is one of the trails being built as part of the opening of the Pikes Peak South Slope. This new trail will will connect Barr Trail to Jones Park and Cheyenne Canon to make one awesome loop. More on the trail can be found here on the Medicine Wheel site.

The Ride the Divide movie can be purchased from the official website or from Amazon.

Leadville 100 Adds Qualifiers as Lottery Entry Deadline Looms

January 29th, 2011

Leadville 100 Start

The Deadline to enter the entry lottery for the Leadville 100 mountain bike race is Monday January 31st at 8pm (MST). If you plan on entering and haven’t yet, I’d enter right away. I ended up needing to email them since I had issues logging into my account from last year.

Being able to enter as a team returned this year after that option was removed last year. Teams of up to 4 can enter and then either all or none will get into the lottery.

Lifetime Fitness announced this week that they will be adding qualifier races as another way to get into the race this year. There will be 3 qualifiers this year and will expand to eight races by 2013. This year’s three races will be held in June and July in California, Colorado and the Northeast. Peter Spencer of Lifetime Fitness told me through email that the races will be around 100k in length.

Each of the races will have 100 Leadville 100 race spots up for grabs. 50 spots will be weighted per age group for the top age group finishers. Peter said that the other “50 spots will be a drawing at the race event for all other finishers under a designated cutoff time (which will be lenient) to allow everyone a chance at the other 50 spots.”

When I asked Peter about whether the field limit would be staying the same he said, “It will increase to 1700 – Last year they actually had 1600 entered into the race. I think 1400 or a little over showed up. Our goal is to not take away from anyone’s chances of getting in via the lottery – just increasing their chances with adding the qualifying series.”

The reaction was mixed on the announcement of qualifiers on the Yahoo Leadville 100 list. Riders that have finished near the cut-off feared their days of doing the race were over. Others were concerned that the race was just being used for profit by big corporations.

I’m no longer fast (I finished 17th overall in 8:18 in 2003) but want to add to my 5 belt buckles and get to the 1,000 mile buckle. The race has grown bigger than I’d like; however, part of the fun of doing the race after the start congestion is there are so many racers and spectators on the course.

With the addition of qualifiers, I think they can add racers that likely will be toward the front of the race where it tends to get more spread out and not cause problems. The 50 that get in by drawing that aren’t the fastest at the qualifiers will at least have demonstrated they should be able to finish and most likely have decent handling skills.

One of the problems since Lance Armstrong raced and the Race Across the Sky movies were made, people have signed up and gotten in that had no fitness or skills for being in the race. The qualifiers will give a chance to those that think they’re good enough that they should be allowed to race to prove it and get to race.

Although I liked the race better when there were half as many racers, the fact is it’s become much bigger and popular. I’m happy that Lifetime Fitness is trying different things to make the race better. Yes, some of it may be so they’ll get more exposure and profit but I rode with Bahram, Lifetime Fitness founder, while training on the Columbine Climb and feel that he really does care about the experience of the race.

2011 Leadville Snow Bike Series

January 17th, 2011

Snow racing will return to Leadville this winter with 3 races in the series. The first is this weekend. Like last year, 2 of them will be night races. The series is a great way to try out snow racing if you don’t live too far away to see if you want a bigger snow adventure like the Susitna 100, Arrowhead 135 or Iditarod Invitational.

Although snow racing is best on a bike like the Surly Pugsley that has clearance for giant tires, you can do it on a regular mountain bike. You just put as wide of tires as will fit on your frame and run low air pressure.

2011 Leadville Winter Mountain Bike Series Schedule

  • East Side Epic: Jan. 22, 10 am
  • Tennessee Pass Night Jam: Feb 19, 7pm
  • Mineral Belt Mayhem: March 5, 7pm

Chris had a good writeup of the East Side Epic last year.

Get the latest info on the Cloud City Wheelers Event Page or the Leadville Winter Mountain Bike Series Facebook page.

10 Most Popular Blog Posts of 2010

January 7th, 2011

It’s hard to believe that another year has come and gone. I don’t make New Year resolutions but I’m looking forward to new adventures and goals in 2011.

As we move into the new year, let’s take a look back at the top 10 most viewed posts on UltraRob’s Adventures in 2010. Interestingly the top 3 spots were the same as in 2009.

10. Jure Robic Dies in Accident

Jure Robic, an amazing ultra endurance cyclist, was killed during a training accident on September 24th. Reportedly he was training for the Crocodile Trophy and hit a car head on while descending a narrow road through the forest near his home in Slovenia. He won the Race Across America 5 times, more than any other male.

9. Wyss Wins RAAM, Robic Drops Out!

This post is from 2009 when Jure Robic dropped out of RAAM with 54 miles to go because he and his crew felt that he was given penalties unfairly while Wyss wasn’t given penalties when they felt he should have.

8. Felony Charge for Racing Leadville 100 Without Entry

Wendy Lyall used Katie Brazelton’s entry in the 2009 Leadville 100. It may have gone unnoticed but Wendy finished 2nd in the 40-49 age group although she was 36. They were both charged with felonies although they plead guilty to lesser charges. At least one and maybe both of them lost their jobs because of it.

7. Leadville 100 Race Across the Sky Movie on DVD

The movie made of the 2009 Leadville 100 when Lance Armstrong won was released on DVD in the spring of 2010.

6. 100 Mile Mountain Bike Races 2010

A list of 100 mile mountain bike races for 2010. I plan on posting a list of 2011 dirty centuries soon.

5. What are Tree Wells and How Do They Kill Skiers?

Last winter within a couple weeks in 2 different cases a skier was found dead in tree wells. This post explains what tree wells are and how they can kill skiers.

4. Livestrong Tattoo

When I broke my derailleur cable in the Black Hills of South Dakota in the summer of 2009, I visited Rabbit Bike in Hill City to get a new one. The owner had a Livestrong tattoo on his calf.

3. Leadville 100 Mountain Bike FAQ

Since Lance Armstrong raced the Leadville 100 in 2008 and 2009 and the Race Across the Sky movie, there’s been a lot of interest in the race. The main Leadville 100 mountain bike FAQ page was the most popular but a couple of the sub posts also made it into the top 10. How to train for the Leadville 100 and the best bike for the Leadville 100 were in the top 10 but I grouped them with this post.

2. Garmin Edge 705 Review – First Impressions

After not having a GPS on my bike or a computer at all on my mountain bike, I upgraded to the cool Garmin Edge 705 a couple years ago. This post has my initial thoughts on it.

1. Top 5 Reasons Cyclists Shave Their Legs

The question I’m asked most about cycling is why do cyclists shave their legs. The 5 reasons I posted continue to be very popular. I also answer some questions in the Cyclist Leg Shaving Questions and Answers post.

A Dozen Mountain Biker Gifts

December 15th, 2010

Still looking for Christmas gifts for the mountain biker in your life? If you procrastinate buying Christmas gifts like I do, time is running out. Here are a dozen gift ideas for mountain bikers.

Helmet Cam

GoPro HD Helmet CamA helmet cam is a great way for mountain bikers to share rides with friends. Most of the cams can also be mounted on the bike. The HD GoPro HERO helmet cams have been very popular. My friends have beat up their older cams and they’ve taken whatever has been thrown at them. The Twenty20 VholdR Camera Recorder is another cam that has been getting good reviews.

Mountain Bike Repair Book

Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike MaintenanceZinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance has recently been updated. It’s a hefty 464 pages of information on illustrated tips for repairing, maintaining, tuning and upgrading your mountain bike. But that size means it (almost) has it all.

Seat Dropper

Seat Dropper - RockShox ReverbDescending on a mountain bike is easier if you’re seat is lower. When I first started mountain biking, I would stop at the top of climbs and lower my seat. Then I’d have to stop at the bottom and raise it again. I finally just got used to riding with the seat at full height all the time. Now stopping isn’t necessary. Now you can adjust your seat height with the push of a lever on the handlebar. Two nice seat droppers are the Crank Brother’s Joplin Adjustable Seatpost and the RockShock Reverb.

Garmin Edge 705

The Garmin Edge 705 is the ultimate cycling computer. It is a newer version of the Garmin Edge 305. They both have GPS and heart rate monitor and can be bought with an optional cadence sensor. The 705 adds a color screen and maps. With the topo maps you can get turn by turn directions even off road although it does try getting you back to the road. Read my Edge 705 review for more details about it. If you want a GPS enabled bike computer but don’t need maps, the Garmin 500 is a good option.

Crank Bros Multi 19 Tool

This multi-tool has everything you need for on the road or trail bike repairs. Not only does it have the standard hex wrenches and screwdrivers, it also has spoke wrenches and a chain tool. The chain tool doesn’t work as good as my stand alone ones but it’s saved me from walking many miles.

Bike Lights

Light and Motion Stella Bike LightBike Lights extend riding hours and riding at night changes a familiar trail into a new adventure. Bike lights also open the world of 24 hour mountain bike racing. Bike lights have came a long, long way since I did my first 24 hours solo mountain bike race. With the switch to LEDs and Li-on batteries, they weigh a lot less. The Light & Motion Stella 400 Dual Bike Light is a top rated bike light although some people like a brighter light for bombing technical trails in the dark. The Light and Motion Seca 700 or Seca 1400 should provide enough light for aggressive riders. The NiteRider TriNewt is another good choice.

RoadID

Safety is important when you’re out mountain biking. We always hope that nothing bad will happen and most likely it won’t. Still it’s good to have some ID on you if you’re injured and can’t talk. I’ve been using the wrist Road ID for a very long and don’t even notice I have it on. They also have ones that go on your ankle or shoe.

Sidi Dominator Mountain Bike Shoes

Sidi Dominator 5 MTB ShoesI’ve been using the Sidi Dominator Shoes for about 10 years after destroying a few pairs of lesser shoes. I’ve gone through a few pairs of Dominator shoes during those 10 years but not as many as I would have with other shoes.

Mountain Bike Helmet

Another safety essential is a helmet. I used the Giro Pneumo for several years. The last couple years I’ve used the Specialized S-Works helmet and have liked it too.

CamelBak Rogue Hydration Pack

The Camelbak Rogue is the hydration pack I use the most. Actually I have two of them I like it so much so I can do a quick swap during long mountain bike races. It has enough storage space to carry a jacket, tubes, and my Crank Brothers multi-tool but doesn’t seem bulky. The 70 ounce bladder is big enough on most rides to get me to where I can refill. When I need to carry more gear and water, I use the Camelbak Blowfish.

Floor Pump

A good floor pump is a must for any cyclist. You can’t go wrong with a pump from Park Tools. Some pumps have a single head that is supposed to work for both Presta and Shraedar valves. I’ve had a couple and weren’t happy with either one. I’d stick to a pump that has a dual head if you want both. I always use Presta valves on my bikes but my kid’s bikes have Shraedar

Seat Pack

A seat pack is nice for carrying a multi-tool, spare tube and tire levers.

If none of the gear above is a good fit for your gift buying, check out the Cycling and Outdoor Gift Card Guide. Also, below are links to some more gift guides for even more gift ideas.

When you click through and buy these or other items this Christmas Season, you’ll be helping those less fortunate.

Leadville 100 Registration Open

November 18th, 2010

Lifetime Fitness Founder and Others at Top of Columbine Climb

Registration for the Leadville Trail races is open including for the Leadville 100 mountain bike race. In the past registration didn’t open until late December or early January. The deadline for getting into the mountain bike lottery hasn’t changed though and is still January 31st.

I’m planning on entering again for my 8th time although I haven’t finished the last 2 years. This year I had an asthma attack just before the Columbine climb and last year I got a stomach bug the night before and bailed after 20 miles. Even without the asthma and stomach bug, I was barely in shape the last 2 years but so far I’ve done better at staying active and maintaining my weight this off season.

From everything I’ve heard, it doesn’t increase your changes of getting in the lottery if you enter early so I plan to wait just in case something comes up that would keep me from doing the race. Last year I waited until a few days before the deadline.

The entry lottery isn’t completely random and I have some information on how the lottery has worked in the past. I don’t know how it will change now that Lifetime fitness owns the race. For more information on registering go to the Leadville Trail 100 website.

Maintenance Bible Retooled

November 12th, 2010

The fifth edition of one of the most well-known books on mountain bike care and repair is now available.  “Zinn & The Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance” (Velo Press) is the world’s best-selling book on mountain bike care and repair.  It’s not something you want to carry in your backpack – it’s a hefty 464 pages of information on illustrated tips for repairing, maintaining, tuning and upgrading your mountain bike.  But that size means it (almost) has it all.

Some highlights:

  • The basics for regular maintenance of your mountain bike.
  • Advance repair instructions.
  • Information on the newest components.
  • Problem solving for issues such as frozen parts and stripped threads.
  • A glossary and reference guide.

Kalan Beisel Rides to Second National Championship

November 9th, 2010

Kalan Beisel - 24 Hours of Moab 2010

This is a guest post by Tim Bergsten from Pikes Peak Sports. Pikes Peak Sports is a site for the outdoor community in the Pikes Peak Region. If you’re interested in guest posting on UltraRob, please contact me.

Two weeks before the 24 Hours of Moab mountain bike race, fate was beating up local rider and mountain bike racer Kalan Beisel. He had won a national championship as part of a 4-person men’s team at the 24 Hours of Moab Mountain Bike Race in 2009, but he wasn’t entered to race this year. It seemed there would be no defending his title. And then he received a phone call from his racing buddy Len Zanni. Beisel, 28, landed on a dream team and won a second national championship.

Beisel graduated from Manitou Springs High School. He has raced mountain bikes for about five years and has been a pro for two years. He currently rides for Team Pro Cycling and is a scholarship rider for Carmichael Training Systems. He also manages to squeeze in time to make a living as a hairstylist at Genesis Salon.

He recently answered a few questions for PikesPeakSports.us. Here is the interview.

Kalan Beisel - 24 Hours of Moab 2010In 2009, you won with teammates Russel Finsterwald, J.J. Clark and Rob Sousa, some familiar names in the C. Springs race scene. This year, you rode with a collection of guys from western Colorado (Len Zanni, Ross Schnell and Jay Henry). What was that like?

In 2009, racing with my Pro Cycling teammates and winning our first national championship was one of the coolest feelings ever! We went into 2010 expecting to have the same team defend the title, but things didn’t work out. Turns out, getting four fast guys together to race a 24-hour race is harder than it sounds, because two weeks before the race my friend Len Zanni called me to ask and see if I was interested to ride on his HoneyStinger/Trek team. He was also having a hard time finding a fourth rider. After I heard the line up for the team, I couldn’t say no! I couldn’t believe I had the opportunity to race on a team with some of the top mountain bike racers in the nation. Of course, this also put huge pressure on me to perform. I was almost more intimidated by my own team more than the race itself! Lol! Thankfully, I had one of the best races of my life and pulled my weight for the team. I also ended up posting the fastest night lap of the race two years in a row!

What was the most challenging thing about this race and how did you deal with it?

The 2-to-6 a.m. night laps are the most challenging part of the race. Getting motivated to tear your legs off at three in the morning isn’t the easiest thing in the world. I figured out – after doing four 24-hour races on a team – that staying awake the whole time is much easier than falling asleep and having to wake up feeling groggy and tired. This year I just started pounding coffee and Redbull starting around 2 a.m. to stay awake until the sun came up. Good music and friends help too!

When you look back on this race, what will you remember?

Looking back I will remember tents, dirt covering everything I own, sand, standing at the starting line shivering waiting for Jay to come in, lots of dirty chamois, Ross being rad, Honey Stinger waffles, stars and stripes, and one hell of a good time!

You rode the last lap. What was that like, knowing you were in the lead and that your team and another championship were waiting for you at the finish?

Coming in for the team’s last lap was quite the honor. I knew as long as I didn’t break my bike in half, or something like that, we would take the win. At that point we had a 45-minute lead and victory was in sight. Crossing the line and hearing the cheers from everyone was a feeling I’ll never forget. I’ve never really felt so proud and overwhelmed with happiness. Very cool!

So with future 24 Hours of Moab races in mind, what do you think of the words “Kalan Beisel, Men’s Solo rider”?

Someday you will definitely hear the words “Kalan” and “solo” in the same sentence, not exactly sure how soon that will be though! Not sure I’m crazy enough … yet..

Looking ahead, what cycling goals are you aiming for in 2011 and beyond?

In 2011 my goals will remain the same as last year’s. I will be racing the National ProXCT series and as many local races as I can squeeze in there. I will also be racing the Bailey Hundo again and thinking I might race the Leadville 100. My main and most important focus is 2011 MTB National Championships.

Race Across the Sky 2010 Tomorrow

November 3rd, 2010

Here’s a reminder that Race Across the Sky, which covers the 2010 Leadville 100 is in movie theaters tomorrow evening, November 4th. It includes a live panel discussion with participating athletes Levi Leipheimer, Rebecca Rusch, Erik Weihenmayer and others. Although there will be an encore presentation on November 9th, it isn’t showing at any Colorado Springs theaters on that date.

Last year the movie sold out in many locations. I’m guessing that was a least partly because Lance Armstrong was in it but I’d get my tickets in advance. From the trailer, it looks like they got some great shots of the race again.

You can get last year’s Race Across the sky on DVD here or at Amazon.
