World Spinning Record Attempt Falls Short

October 15th, 2010

Ryan Correy fell short in his attempt to break the Guinness spinning world record. His crew left a comment on his streaming video early Wednesday morning that said “Well folks….it’s done. Ryan has hit the mental point of no return.” Ryan hasn’t given any details but he did post on Facebook that he is recovering with his family. (Update: Ryan was having hallucinations and was unable to snap out of his final hallucination.)

That would have put him just short of 7 days (officially 6 days, 20 hours) of non-stop spinning. That is about a day and a half short of the 200 hour record. It still is an amazing feat! The longest I’ve ridden my trainer is 6 hours and that was plenty long.

24 Hours of Moab This Weekend

October 9th, 2010

24 Hours of Moab 2009

The 16th Annual 24 Hours of Moab is going on this weekend and is the USA Cycling 24 Hour National Championships. I raced it solo 4 times with the last time in 2001. The last 2 years I’ve gone and shot photos. I’m at home this weekend but wishing I were out there.

Josh Tostado and Kelly Magelky Leading Solo Men in 2009In the Men’s Solo, winner Josh Tostado is back to defend his title. Last year’s 2nd place finisher, Kelly Magelky, is also back and I’m sure he’s looking to move up a spot on the podium. He actually had some faster daylight laps than Josh last year but was slower during the night. As I write this, they’ve finished 3 laps and Kelly is less than 3 minutes ahead of Josh. Last year 4th place Ernesto Marenchin is also back.

2009 Defending champion Eszter Horanyi isn’t back this year but 2007 and 2008 winner Jari Kirkland is. Kris Cannon, who finished 2nd in 2008, is also racing this year.

Kalan BeiselIn the Pro Men’s class, Kalan Beisel from last year’s winning 4 person team is teamed up with 3 different very fast pros racing as the Honey Stinger/Trek team. The other 3 are Len Zanni, Jay Henry and Ross Schnell. I’ll be surprised if they don’t win the championship. Last year’s 2nd place team, Hammer Nutrition is back with 3 of the same racers as last year.

Although there are 3 women’s Pro 4 person teams, I don’t see any names that stand out. In the past the Coed Pro/Am class was very competitive but I don’t see any teams entered in it this year.

Granny Gear has perfected putting on 24 Hours Races and even in the remote Moab location they have nearly real time standings online. The race runs from noon Saturday and noon Sunday. Unlike some other 24 hours races, laps started before noon but not completed by noon count so some teams don’t finish until 1 PM or later.

Ryan Correy Attempting to Break World Spinning Record

October 6th, 2010

Ryan Correy

Today 2008 RAAM finisher, Ryan Correy, is starting his attempt to break the Guinness World Record for continuous indoor spinning. He had planned to start Monday but postponed it a couple days because of being sick.

Good Luck to Ryan! I like doing long rides outside but the longest I’ve ridden inside is 7 hours and that was more than enough.

There is a camera set up and you can see it online. He is also planning to post some updates on twitter.

Here’s a short interview with him about the attempt.

UltraRob: What motivated you to attempt the record?

Ryan: I’m always looking for ways to turn my passion for cycling into my purpose in life. After finishing the Race Across America in 2008, I came across a news piece on George Hood and his bid to reclaim his spinning world record.

The parameters of the attempt are very similar in a lot of respects, minus the fact that you’re not going anywhere, at about the same speed.

Ultimately, what led me to me to this point is that I believe that I can do it, simple enough.

UltraRob:What are the rules for an official Guinness World Record attempt?

Ryan: The rules for the record attempt are:

  • Must cover (not maintain) 12 mph
  • Only allowed 5 minutes off the bike for every hour on. This time can be saved for longer breaks.
  • Must be completed on a spin bike, not a regular bike on rollers
  • 2 witnesses have to be present at all times as well as a 24 hour camera
  • The resistance can be whatever I want, but of course, this can present certain challenges

UltraRob: What’s the current record?

Ryan: The current record is 200 hours by Frank Trtschka of Germany. George Hood, a previous record holder from the U.S. will probably be making another attempt after me.

Fun at Outerbike 2010

October 4th, 2010

Outerbike 2010

I spent the last 4 days baking in the desert at Outerbike. Outerbike brought 20 bike companies and a few bike accessory companies to Moab, UT for an expo. It was so well organized I would have never guessed it was a first year event.

The Outerbike expo area was set up at the Bar M trailhead. There are a few trails there for riding with about 15 miles of riding. Each day they also shuttled people to another trail for longer rides. There wasn’t anything to keep people from going and riding somewhere else but they had guides out on the trails with tubes and tools in case riders needed help. The rides were

Except for the first day, they had lunch at the expo area so you could eat something other than Cliff Bars and gels. They had a big tent with tables and chairs so you could sit down out of the sun. At the end of the day, there was a beer garden under the big tent. The first 2 evenings they had a movie in town. Saturday night they had a party at Woody’s Tavern although not much was happening when I stopped by.

All of the people from the bike companies were really helpful. Two companies stood out though. Fox Shox had a couple guys there. They were great at fine tuning their shocks on the bikes I test rode. Osprey was there with their bike hydration packs. They had the packs stocked with a spare tube, mini-pump, multi-tool and Honey Stinger energy blocks. They used brand new bladders so their weren’t any issues with them being clean and then you could take the bladder with you.

There were a huge selection of different mountain bikes and a few road bikes to ride. I ended up not riding that many different bikes though. On Friday and Saturday I did the longer rides and was pretty cooked after riding in the mid 90 temps (that’s 10-15 degrees above normal). I rode the Cannondale one twenty, Yeti 575, Santa Cruz Blur, Santa Cruz Tallboy and Rocky Mountain Altitude 29.

Western Spirit Cycling, the organizer, plans on making Outerbike even bigger next year. I definitely recommend going whether or not you are planning on getting a new bike soon. It was $150 this year and that gave 4 days of hard riding without beating up your own bike plus plenty of extras.

Leadville 100 Movie Tickets on Sale Now

October 1st, 2010

Tickets are now on sale for the Race Across the Sky 2010 on November 4th. It includes a live panel discussion with participating athletes Levi Leipheimer, Rebecca Rusch, Erik Weihenmayer and others. There will be an encore presentation on November 9th.

Last year the movie sold out in many locations. I don’t know if that was because Lance Armstrong was in it but I’d get my tickets in advance. From the trailer, it look like they got some great shots of the race again.

Fall Colors Bike Ride to Cripple Creek

September 28th, 2010

Fall Aspen Near Cripple Creek, CO

I’ve ridden to Cripple Creek on Gold Camp Road several times in the fall when the aspen have been turned but it’s been awhile since I last did it. A few weeks ago, I was hanging out at Kinfolks after hiking the Manitou Incline and one of my friends told me a group was going to ride their mountain bikes to Cripple Creek. The date was this past Saturday.

I was busy so I never tracked down the details on the ride. They were also spending the night and riding back on Sunday. It did get me thinking though that it was time to do that ride again.

We celebrated my daughter’s 6th birthday Friday evening so I didn’t get my bike and gear ready the night before. It was nearly 10 before I got started which was later than I had wanted to. It was already very warm when I rolled out from my house. It was looking to be a beautiful day with deep, blue sky and no clouds to be seen. I still took a vest and arm and knee warmers because it doesn’t take much to get cold at 10,000 feet this time of year.

Since Gold Camp Road is an old railroad grade, it climbs gradually and starting from my house I get about 20 miles of climbing before it tops out near Rosemont Reservoir. Once I passed closed tunnel #3, I found they had graded the closed section of road the more than I’ve seen in years. I know they want to keep it usable in case of a forest fire but not sure why they did so much grading. In places it made it tough to find a rideable line through the loose, deep gravel.

On the lower part, the aspen were barely changing color but once I got up higher they were beautiful yellow with just a little orange and red mixed in. The bright sunlight and cloudless sky made them even prettier.

About 10 miles before Cripple Creek, I caught up with the group that was riding. Many of them are hashers so it was no surprise that they had their SAG vehicle well stocked with beer. They offered me some but I was 40 miles into my ride and feeling a little dehydrated so I stuck to some fresh water.

I met my wife and kids in Cripple Creek and hung out with them for a few minutes before heading home on the highway. I knew I had to keep moving because I didn’t have a lot of daylight left. As it was, I ended up running out of daylight a little ways before getting home and I didn’t have lights.

After I called my wife to come get me, I kept riding but ended up getting a big nail in my tire. My CO2 adapter seemed to clog with ice but when I tried a 2nd cartridge I still couldn’t get air into the tire. I still got in 90 miles of great riding with about half of it dirt and half pavement.

Section 16 Vote Tomorrow

September 27th, 2010

Manitou Section 16 from White Acres

Manitou Section 16 is a popular hiking and mountain biking area adjoining Red Rock Canyon and White Acres at the edge of Colorado Springs. It provides access to the Pike National Forest and the Paul Intemann Trail. It has been leased since 1972 from the Colorado State Land Board for public recreation. The current lease is up the end of the year.

Both El Paso county and Colorado Springs have tried buying it from the State Land Board. A new law solved one of the issues with buying it. The remaining issue has been the price. Appraisals have come in between $2.8 million and $8.9 million.

Now the State Land Board has proposed to sell Section 16 for $3.8 million. A 99 year agreement to not develop mineral rights will cost an addition $321,000. Including a $1 million dollar grant from Great Outdoors Colorado, the city has received grant funds and pledges of $1,253,500. The rest would come from the TOPS Program.

More information on the proposal can be found here . The State Land Board is to consider the sale to Colorado Springs at an October 8th public meeting in Pueblo.

The Colorado Springs council has a resolution authorizing the Parks Department to enter into a purchase agreement for the Section 16 on the agenda for tomorrow afternoon. The Council meeting will be in the Colorado Springs City Hall at 107 N. Nevada Avenue beginning at 1:00 P.M. Section 16 is the last item on the agenda.

If you can’t make it to the council metting, contact the Council members before the meeting and let them know that Section 16 is important for outdoor recreation and the views from the city. I can never remember which district I’m in but the council district map is here. I don’t think it hurts though to contact all of them.

Jure Robic Dies in Accident

September 24th, 2010

Jure Robic

There’s some very sad news in the ultracycling world today. Five time Race Across America winner, Jure Robic, has died from a collision with a car. I haven’t found much information yet on the accident but according to an article I found he died at the scene of the crash. Here’s a link to the Google translation of the article.

Robic was known for how little sleep he could get by on in RAAM. In 2004 it was reported that in almost 9 days he had slept a total of 8 hours. The RAAM movie Bicycle Dreams showed how hard he raced.

He’s married and if I remember correctly he has one child. I pray for his family through this terrible tragedy.

Kids on Bikes Fundraiser Rides and Fun This Weekend

September 21st, 2010

Kids on Bikes

Kids on Bikes is a great local organization that helps kids earn a bike. Paige Carmichael, Chris Carmichael’s wife, started Kids on Bikes to help provide solutions to rising childhood obesity rates and highlight the benefits of physical activity for children. Paige believes every child deserves to experience the joy, freedom, and confidence of owning a bike. My kids enjoyed the kids race that had at the 24 Hours of Colorado Springs last weekend.

Kids on Bikes is hosting their first annual fundraising ride this Saturday at the Air Force Academy. There will be three ride options (4 mile family, 16 mile, and 24 mile routes) on the Santa Fe Trail. After the rides, there will be a picnic and Kids Zone. The Kids Zone will have: bike decorating station, bounce house, face painting, balloon animals, carnival games, the Chick-Fil-A Cow, bubbles, snow cone machine, and more!

All proceeds from the ride will help Kids on Bikes to bring joy one bike at a time to children in the Pikes Peak Region. Pledges collected will help sponsor fifth grade students in low-income school districts to earn bikes by reaching academic, behavior, and character development goals in their ABC’s Program.

The 2 longer ride options cost $25 dollars per person plus require $25 minimum in pledges. The 4 mile family ride is $50 for the entire family. No pledges are required for the family ride but pledges can be collected to be eligible for prizes. Online registration ends Thursday evening but there will also be registration at the Air Force Academy on Saturday morning.

Pledge Prizes:

$25 KOB cycling socks ~ $50 KOB baseball hat ~ $75 KOB t-shirt ~ $100 KOB signature cycling jersey ~ over $100 enters you into drawings for fabulous prizes including a new bike and Lance Armstrong signed jersey

Check the Kids on Bikes site for more information.

Luncheon with Linda Armstrong Kelly

In addition to this weekend’s rides, Kids on Bikes is having a luncheon with Linda Armstrong Kelly, Lance Armstrongs mom, next Tuesday, September 28th. Linda will serve as the keynote speaker for the luncheon and local cycling legend Chris Carmichael will also be in attendance as a special guest to introduce Linda. Linda will be discussing the tools she gave Lance, to succeed and the opportunity his bike provided.
