24 Hours of Colorado Springs

This weekend mountain bikers got a chance to test their endurance on the Falcon Trail at the Air Force Academy during the new 24 Hours of Colorado Springs. The nearly 13 mile course is nearly all singletrack except for the start/finish area.

I was surprised by the large percentage of solo riders. There were a total of 19 solo riders compared to 18 four person teams and 6 duo teams. Six of the solo men were riding singlespeeds. Nick Thelen won the solo singlespeed class and was 3rd overall in the solo category.

A few photos from the 24 Hours of Colorado Springs are below and you can find more of my photos here. Results are below the photos.

Jumping Cyclocross Barrier

The first Pikes Peak Velo cyclocross race of the season was Saturday. It wasn’t even close to cyclocross weather with the high well into the 80s and the course was dry and dusty. You can find results here.

Ride the Divide Movie Review

September 17th, 2010

I’ve been planning to buy the Ride the Divide movie DVD but hadn’t gotten it yet so I was excited when I heard that it was coming to the big screen for one night in Colorado Springs (It’s possible there’ll be another local showing around the end of the year). I know a couple guys that have finished the Tour Divide which the movie is about. It’s also on my list of dream things to do.

The Tour Divide is mountain bike race that starts in Banff, Canada and roughly follows the Continental Divide to the Mexico border. It’s just over 2,700 miles with over 200,000 feet of climbing. The rules prohibit any outside support other than what the racers can find in towns along the course or from boxes they’ve sent to post offices along the way.

The Ride the Divide movie was shoot during the 2008 race. The movie mainly follows 3 of the racers. The 3 are Matthew Lee, Mike Dion and Mary Metcalf-Collier. It was Matthew’s 5th time doing the race and Mike and Mary were rookies. It was Mike’s idea to have the race filmed.

The race goes through amazingly beautiful, remote areas and the movie captures some awesome views. Along with the remoteness comes wildlife and some of it isn’t friendly. There’s a nice scene of a big bear looking for something to eat.

As you can imagine, riding long hours day after day takes it’s toll on the racers both physically and mentally. Sometimes the physical pain causes the mental battles. Mary’s legs and ankles become extremely swollen and she quits a couple times but then gets back on her bike and continues to ride south. I thought the movie showed the struggles well although you can’t totally capture what goes on deep inside of an endurance racer in an event like this.

Although I knew that the Tour Divide and Race Across America (RAAM) are totally different types of races, the differences were striking. I was expecting more sleep deprivation. Although without a crew to help them, the Tour Divide riders wouldn’t be able to function on as little sleep as the RAAM racers. Also RAAM doesn’t allow racers to ride together for more than 15 minutes in a 24 hour period but Tour Divide allows racers to ride together. The Tour Divide riders were shown sitting at restaurants eating meals while RAAM racers mainly eat on the bike and only are off the bike to sleep.

The guys filming the movie are shown at points throughout the movie. At times they help fill in what the racers are doing when they can’t get to them. A few times though it seemed showing them didn’t add anything and I would have just as soon they left the scene out.

All in all I really enjoyed the movie and picked up a copy for some motivation while riding the trainer this winter. Mountain bikers will definitely enjoy the movie and I think anyone that enjoys adventure will too. Order a copy for yourself and get some of your Christmas shopping done early by getting a copy for your friend. The movie is available from the Ride the Divide website and soon from Amazon.

2010 Leadville 100 Race Across the Sky Movie

September 14th, 2010

Citizen pictures is making a movie about the Leadville 100 again this year. The plan is for it to be in theatres November 4th, 2010.

I enjoyed the Leadville 100 movie they made last year. You can read my 2009 Race Across the Sky review here. I expect this year’s movie will be another good one to watch with so many big name racers even though Lance Armstrong wasn’t there.

Here’s a quick reminder for those in the Colorado Springs area. The Ride the Divide movie is showing tomorrow night at Stargazers Theater. Details here. For other locations, check the list of screenings.

Williams Canyon Loop

September 13th, 2010

Mountain Biking Williams Canyon

The weather on Saturday was perfect for a bike ride. Eric, my best friend from childhood and teammate in the mid ’90s on the Schwinn grassroots team, had a perfect suggestion for a mountain bike ride. He suggested we go ride the Williams Canyon Loop.

Williams Canyon is a beautiful canyon at the edge of Manitou Springs. The upper part is National Forest land and the bottom is owned by the Cave of the Winds. There is a social trail through the canyon.

In the National Forest, it’s an unsanctioned trail and technically no one is allowed on it, but dispersed forest rules apply. Cave of Winds allows people to hike on their property after filling out a waiver. The Cave of the Winds hiking waiver can be found online and only needs to be taken to the Cave of the Winds ticket office once a year.

Like the jersey Eric is wearing? You can get your own UltraRob.com jersey from this page.

Outerbike

September 10th, 2010

View from Sovereign Singletrack

Update: Read About My Experience at Outerbike

Most people that are serious cyclists know about Interbike. Many haven’t been to it though because it’s an industry only event. This year it’s September 20-24 in Las Vegas. The first 2 days are the outdoor demo and the following 3 days are the indoor show.

This year another group is organizing an an event for non-industry people in Moab, UT the week after Interbike. The event is called Outerbike and is 4 days of riding 2011 demo bikes at the Bar M trailhead. Bike manufactures participating in Outerbike include Specialized, Trek, Cannondale, Marin, Kona, Santa Cruz, Turner, Yeti, Pivot, Ibis, Maverick and Rocky Mountain among others.

The cost is $150 and includes free lunches and free beer at the end of the day on Friday and Saturday. The movies Race Across the Sky and Follow Me will be shown in the evenings. There’s also a party on Saturday.

As much fun as Interbike was last year, I’m skipping it this year and will be at Outerbike instead since I’d rather be in Moab than Las Vegas.

Cyclocross is Hip

September 9th, 2010

Here’s a funny video about cyclocross. I’ve seen it before but thought I’d post it since cyclocross season is starting. It seems that cyclocross is continuing to get bigger in the US.

For those that aren’t familiar with it, cyclocross is a from of bike racing that takes place during the fall and winter. The race courses can be a mix of dirt and pavement. It’s also common for there to be plenty of mud. Traditionally there have been barriers where riders dismount and run. Over the last couple years, the barriers have started going away.

The bikes look similar to road bikes but have more clearance for the tires. This allows for wider tires and also keeps the mud from jamming up as bad.

I raced a lot of cyclocross back in the early ’90s and even raced National Championships in 1992. Back then it was little known in the US and it has become much more competitive.

Below is video from the 2009 Colorado State Cyclocross Championships. It brings back many memories of racing in snow and having trouble staying upright.

Join Me Tonight for Colorado Springs Cruisers

August 31st, 2010

Colorado Springs Cruisers

Tonight I’ll be at the Colorado Springs Cruisers bike ride at McCabe’s Tavern. I’ll have UltraRob.com stickers, t-shirts and jerseys. Stickers are free and I will be giving a couple t-shirts away. Ok, I don’t have a cruiser bike so I’ll be riding my mountain bike so bring any bike you have.

Plus there’ll be $3 Pints of New Belgium Brewing beers and another fun group of people to socialize and ride with. The ride is short and at a slow pace so if you can ride a bike, you can do the ride. See you there!

I’ve ridden a couple times this summer. People start showing up after 5:00 and socialize and then the ride starts around 6:00. Hang out afterward and have some dinner and/or a beer.
