Colorado Trail Segment Closed

July 16th, 2010

An important leg of the Colorado Trail will be closed beginning in August. A seven-mile stretch through Waterton Canyon, part of Segment 1,  will be closed from Aug. 2-Dec. 3 and Feb. 28-Dec. 31, 2011 so a Denver Water contractor can dredge the Strontia Springs Reservoir. The reservoir contains more than a million cubic yards of sediment, remaining from the 2006 Hayman fire.  The project requires heavy machinery and equipment.

Waterton Canyon will be closed as follows:
– Monday, Aug. 2, 2010 until Sunday, Dec. 3, 2010
– Monday, Feb. 28, 2011 until Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011

Both the parking lot at the canyon entrance and the canyon will be closed. The next closest access to CT Segment 1 is via the Indian Creek Trailhead on Colorado Highway 67, 10.5 miles west of Sedalia.

For more information, go to the Colorado Trail website, or Denver Water .

The Rise of the Gran Fondo

July 15th, 2010

Gran Fondo

The first I’d heard of a gran fondo was for Levi Leipheimer’s King Ridge Gran Fondo last fall. It along and the Gran Fondo Colnago San Diego last year were the first gran fondos in the US. This year more than a dozen are planned.

So what is a gran fondo? In Italian it means “big ride”. Like century bike rides, a gran fondo in the US is generally around 100 miles with shorter options for those that don’t want to ride that far.

If a gran fondo is 100 miles, why isn’t it just called a century ride? Unlike most century rides, gran fondos are mass start events and are timed. Gran fondos also generally have a cycling celebrity on the ride. Outside of Italy, the rides are also called cyclosportives

Although in Italy gran fondos are ridden as true races for the top riders, in the US many courses aren’t closed to traffic and state that they aren’t a race. Some give medals to riders that finish within a certain time or have a special times section. Of course when there’s a pack of cyclists, there’s nearly always at least some of them riding like it’s a race.

Although several gran fondos have taken place this year, there are still several coming up. Below is a list of ones later this year although a few are already sold out.

The Artist Behind the ROLL Bike Art Festival

July 14th, 2010

This is a guest post by Tim Bergsten from Pikes Peak Sports. Pikes Peak Sports is a site for the outdoor community in the Pikes Peak Region. If you’re interested in guest posting on UltraRob, please contact me.

Growing up in Deming, N.M., with miles of desert surrounding her, Amy Seltzer relied on her imagination to help pass the day. There were no distractions, no Facebook or cell phone. It was Seltzer, the sand and cactus, and parents who encouraged her creativity.

“I never learned what couldn’t be done,” said Seltzer, an artist and cyclist who now lives in Colorado Springs. “I was never taught you can do this, but you can’t do that.”

Amy SeltzerSo when the idea to create the ROLL Bike Art Festival in Colorado Springs presented itself, Seltzer (left) pursued it with confidence. She never considered that it couldn’t be done.

“When I started the bike art show, it was a little bit of an uphill battle,” she said. “People were like, ‘what are you talking about?’ But I didn’t get discouraged.”

She remained persistent, kept an open mind and allowed her imagination to do some heavy lifting. With the help of her friends and fellow artists John and Jennifer Ellis, she launched the first bike art show in 2005.

On Aug. 13-15, the ROLL Bike Art Festival will celebrate its sixth year, with artists from near and far displaying their work at Venue 515 in Manitou Springs. Seltzer has put out a final call for art entries. Deadline is July 19. Contact rollexhibit@gmail.com for more information. A press release about the event can be read here.

Jimmy Descant of Salida, COA 1993 graduate of New Mexico State University with a degree in plant genetics, Seltzer went to work for the U.S. Forest Service in Lincoln, Neb. She was successful at her work and was encouraged by her employers to earn her a doctorate degree. But her imagination had other ideas.

“I don’t know what happened, but I decided I was going to give up everything and move to Colorado and become an artist,” she said. “People told me I could be a great scientist. But I had gone to school for four years, I’d worked as a scientist for four years. I decided I wasn’t going to do that anymore.”

Her creativity was piqued by sports art. She eventually landed in Colorado Springs, attracted to the athletes and activities at the Olympic Training Center. She also began creating art with cycling as the subject matter. Her creative path was set.

“From the first time I drew a bike, I knew, ‘this is it,’” she said. “Bike art is so much different. You can see so much about a person’s personality when they get on a bike because they are putting themselves on the line. There are different people and they are all different riders.”

A trip to the Chicago Critical Mass Bike Art Show gave her the idea to do a show in Colorado Springs. The ROLL Bike Art show started at the Smokebrush Gallery, then moved to the Warehouse restaurant. This year mark’s the show’s debut at Venue 515.

The event has become much more than an art exhibit. Seltzer said she has tried to “let the show be what it wants to be.”

“The cycling community wants this show to be something, but it hasn’t defined it yet,” she said.

But the ROLL show is something different, it is filling a void in the cycling community. “ROLL feels like it wants to be something more,” Seltzer said. “Our last year at the Smokebrush, people came at 4 (p.m.) and stayed until 11.

“When we started, we wanted to help build a sense of community among the cyclists in Colorado Springs,” Seltzer said. “That was the whole founding purpose.”

Since then, organizations such as the nonprofit Kids on Bikes, as well as Bike Month+ have become involved.

Roll Bike Art Festival“We’re all kind of coordinating and networking as we move forward,” Seltzer said. But the show has struck a deep chord with the people of Colorado Springs. Seltzer said the artwork, which ranges from pottery and sculpture to oil and watercolor paintings to some that is difficult to describe, helps residents express how they feel about cycling.

“It makes people feel the way they feel when they have that great bike ride,” she said. “The reason a lot of people live here or stay here is they want to be on their bike. And their artwork reflects their lifestyle.”

One thing is certain, the ROLL Bike Art Festival is popular. Expect a packed house on opening night. The event is a fundraiser for Medicine Wheel.

“I’m trying to listen,” Seltzer said. “ROLL is obviously filling something that wasn’t there. And now the cycling community is growing and networking and all of these other organizations are stepping forward. Seems like there has always been a need for a social event that is geared toward cyclists. And ROLL has filled that void. And maybe this is Colorado Springs’ version of a gala.

Just the idea that people are hanging out is something I ponder. What is this saying? The interest is there. The growth is there. It’s obvious that this is not going away. I don’t know what it all means, but I can feel the energy in it.”

Is Traffic Furniture Making the Tour de France Dangerous?

July 13th, 2010

Lance Armstrong of Radio Shack

The first week of racing at the Tour de France has left the peloton battered and bandaged. It has left some people wondering if the course has been too dangerous. I don’t remember where but I did read one article that said it was just bike racing and it hasn’t been that bad. Chris Carmichael and Greg Lemond have both written that it was a rough week.

Lance Armstrong has had particularly bad luck in this year’s Tour. He lost nearly 12 minutes after crashes in Sunday’s stage. Honestly though I’m more surprised that he won 7 consecutive Tours without any bad crashes or getting sick. With 3 weeks of racing for each one, that’s nearly half a year without an illness at the wrong time. It did seem he had stomach ailments one year and sat in on some flat stages.

In Carmichael’s article, he talks about some of the reasons why there may be more crashes now and why there are more broken bones. One the reasons he talks about is more “traffic furniture”. He says, “the small towns and cities throughout Europe have been steadily placing roundabouts, speed bumps, chicanes, and narrowed sections of road in place in order to slow down traffic.” Not only do they increase the chance of a crash but can make for a harder landing.

Hopefully now that Lance is out of GC contention, he’ll go for some stage wins and make for some interesting racing. He has also said he’ll ride for Levi Leipheimer. There’s still plenty of exciting racing left no matter what Lance does.

Pro XCT CTS International Classic Circuit

July 11th, 2010

Heather Irmiger

Another great day of mountain bike racing at Cheyenne Mountain State Park for the Pro XCT finals. Originally they were calling today’s race for the Pros and short track but changed to calling it a circuit race because the course was too long to be a true short track.

In the Pro women’s race, Georgia Gould, Katie Compton and Willow Koerber opened an early lead. Gould ended up winning and sweeping the 3 days. Compton came in 2nd followed by Willow Koerber. They were also the top 3 in that order for the CTS International Classic overall.

In the Pro men’s race, a group formed with Todd Wells, Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski, Geoff Kabush and Ryan Trebon. Trebon kept trying to open a gap but couldn’t and fell back. Wells took the win followed by Horgan-Kobelski and Kabush. Overall for the CTS International Classic it was 1. Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski, 2. Geoff Kabush and 3. Todd Wells.

CTS International Classic Cross Country

July 11th, 2010

Todd Wells and Geoff Kabush

Yesterday was the cross country race of the CTS International Classic. I missed the amateurs and Pro women because I was off doing my own 5.5 hour mountain bike ride. I did go watch the Pro Men race although I didn’t have the energy to go out much on the course like I normally do.

Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski took the lead on the first lap although he said he took it a bit cautious on the descent because he hadn’t pre-ridden the course. At the end of the lap 1 descent Geoff Kabush was just behind him with Todd Wells about 18 seconds back.

Horgan-Kobelski was able to open a slightly bigger gap over the next few laps but then Kabush and Wells were able to catch him at the start of the fifth and final lap. On the climb he was able to get a gap on Wells but Kabush hung on his wheel. Kabush took a corner a little too tight and ended up smacking his head on a tree. He was dazed for a bit and let a gap open up.

At the line it was Horgan-Kobelski followed about 20 seconds later by Kabush. Wells was only a couple more seconds back. Sam Schultz came in over 5 minutes later for 4th. The top 3 on GC are Horgan-Kobelski, Kabush and Wells.

Max Plaxton, Friday’s time trial winner, took a header on I believe the 3rd lap. When he got down to the start/finish area he was incoherent. He was pulled from the race and given a time in last place. Since they gave him a time he can still race today if the medics clear him.

In the women’s race, Georgia Gould had another dominant win. She also leads the GC after also winning the time trial Friday night.

Today the racing continues with the amateurs racing another cross country course and the Pros racing a short track. Pro women start at 3 PM and Pro men start at 4 PM.

CTS International Classic Time Trial

July 9th, 2010

Kyle Ashton Crashes

Tonight a 4.4 mile time trial kicked off the 3 day CTS International Classic at Cheyenne Mountain State Park. It’s the Pro XTC Series final and the series winner will earn a spot at World Championships. It also has nearly half the UCI ranking points that will help determine the Olympic team in 2012.

Although a little rain fell as women were starting, it didn’t last long and the course didn’t get too wet. Part of the course used the technical Medicine Wheel trail so racers had plenty of challenge without rain.

Max Plaxton won the men’s race. Series leader Todd Wells had bad luck and flatted and couldn’t get his tire to seal. He finished 39th and lost just over 3 minutes to Plaxton. Fortunately for him there are 2 long days of racing left and he only needs to finish 8th overall to win the series.

Georgia Gould won the women’s race. She has a large lead in the series and looks like she’s on form. Of course some bad luck can quickly change things.

Top Pro Men Results

1. Max Plaxton, 17:11
2. Geoff Kabush, 17:20
3. J. Horgan-Kobelski, 17:21
4. Sam Schultz 17:40

6. Benjamin Sonntag, 18:08
7. Ryan Trebon, 18:19
8. Brady Kappius, 18:20
9. Troy Wells, 18:26
10. Colin Cares, 18:29

Top Pro Women Results

1. Georgia Gould, 19:14
2. Katie Compton, 19:59
3. Heather Irmiger, 20:19
4. Chloe Forsman, 20:21

6. Krista Park, 20:31
7. Allison Mann, 20:53
8. Amy Dombroski, 20:54
9. Pua Sawicki, 20:55
10. Amanda Carey, 21:00

Complete Pro Men and Women results are on Pikes Peak Sports. They also have results for the Cat 1 amateur racers and Cat 2/3/Singlespeed.

The Ultimate Triathlon

July 9th, 2010

If you love extreme adventures, you’re going to love this guy.  Charlie Wittmack is an adventurer from Des Moines, Iowa, who left last week on a world triathlon.  Wittmack’s tri will take him 12,000 miles over 13 countries.  Starting in the icy waters of the River Thames in England and ending with a climb to the summit of Mount Everest, Wittmack will swim, bike and climb.

The numbers are astounding – he will swim 275 miles, bike 9,000 miles from France to India, and climb or run 950 miles over 11 months, ending with a short jaunt up the flank of Mount Everest.  Wittmack is a world-class climber who has climbed Everest before, trekked across East Africa, sailed the Indian Ocean in a handmade boat, and ridden 5,100 miles on a bike across the U.S., but he’s not just doing this for the thrills.  He is also working to draw attention to global health issues, including an initiative on safe child-bearing in Nepal, and to develop an innovative educational curriculum.

To follow Wittmack’s world triathlon attempt, go to his site at theworldtri.com

PRO XCT Mountain Bike Final This Weekend

July 8th, 2010

Adam Craig and Sam Schultz - PRO XCT Cheyenne Mountain State Park 2009

The USA Cycling PRO XCT series makes its final stop this weekend, July 9-11, in Colorado Springs at the Carmichael Training Systems International Classic presented by GT Bicycles. There will be 3 days of racing at Cheyenne Mountain State Park.

This year’s race is not only the PRO XCT final but it’s also part of the Alison Dunlap Junior MTB Series as well. Both Pros and Amateurs will race the 3 day stage race starting with a 4.4 mile time trial on Friday evening which includes the locally infamous Medicine Wheel trail which will certainly favor the most technically adept riders.

The racing continues on Saturday with the 4.9 mile short cross country course. It includes the challenging Cougars Shadow trail that surprised quite a few Pro riders last year with it’s twisting single track laced with boulders sometimes the size of small cars.

Finishing up on Sunday the Amateur riders will race the 8.5 mile long cross country course and the Pros finish on the 1.4 mile short track making for three exciting days of race action just minutes away from downtown Colorado Springs.

The Kids on Bikes kiddies race encompasses sections of the Pros short track course and should be a great time for the events youngest riders.

In the Pro men’s race, the top five riders currently leading the PRO XCT will be racing. At the end of the weekend the men’s series will most likely crown Todd Wells (Specialized) as long as he finishes better than eighth as his lead seems nearly insurmountable. Second through fifth is more complicated and should be great racing with Geoff Kabush (Maxxis/Rocky Mtn), Max Plaxton (Specialized/Sho-Air), Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski (Subaru/Trek) and Sam Schultz (Subaru/Trek) all within striking distance of second place. This battle will definitely be the highlight of the PRO XCT finale.

On the Pro women’s side of things for the PRO XCT series it looks like Georgia Gould (LUNA Chix) and Willow Koerber (Subaru/Trek) have virtual locks on first and second place respectively as long as they can finish inside the top ten. Third place will most likely go to Heather Irmiger (Subaru/Trek) as Lene Byberg (Specialized) is racing in Europe and Kelli Emmett (Giant) will probably slip to fourth, as she isn’t competing due to sponsor commitments. Fifth place is where the action is for the women with Amy Dombroski (LUNA Chix) and Aleksandra Mooradian (K.Bedford/Verge/Spin) most likely battling for that spot as 12 points separate them. However, if Pau Sawicki (MATA) decides to make the trip to Colorado Springs then there could be a three-way battle for fifth place. Katie Compton (Planet Bike) with a great ride could rocket up the leaders board and possible contend for fifth place as well. It will be an exciting three days of racing.

Nearly half of the UCI points awarded in the US this year will be from these 3 days of racing. UCI points are used for qualifying for the Olympics. Also the Pro XCT series Men and Women winners get an automatic 2010 World Championship spot.

It’s not just for racers though. The start and finish for all races winds through the Bicycle Expo and Pro Team parking areas. It allows spectators to keep an eye on the exciting racing action while they’re checking out the latest bicycle equipment and Pro set ups. The racing will be fueled by a guaranteed $10,000 Pro cash prize purse. Anchoring the Expo are GT Bicycles, Kenda Tire and Specialized Bicycles and there will be on food concessions on site as well.

Schedule

  • July 8 Number pick up at Carmichael Training Systems Hwy
    24 & 21st St from 5-9 PM
  • July 9 Stage 1: Encantadas Time Trial using the very technical Medicine Wheel trail
  • July 10 Stage 2: Cross Country for everyone (same course as in 2009)
  • July 11 Stage 3: Amateur Cross Country (different course than July 10 but using the same S/F line). Pro Men and Pro WomenShort Track Cross Country per UCI MTB Criterium rules.

Race details are located here.

Volunteers Needed

The race could use more volunteers for course marshaling. Email Allen Beauchamp or call him at 719-351-3205 if you can help out on either of the 3 days.

Long time fast mountain bike racer, Jurgen Bergeron is in charge of directing traffic going in and out of the race area. Part of the road is used for the course so there’s only one lane for traffic. This would be a great volunteer position for people that like to talk to people coming and going. Give him a call at 321-8590 if you want to help with that.

UltraRob.com Jersey Update and Jersey Winner

July 5th, 2010

UltraRob Jersey Front

UltraRob Jersey Back

Here’s the 2nd draft of the UltraRob.com jersey. It’s getting close. The blue along the bottom needs some tweaking. I think it needs to fade over a larger distance or at fade a U shape so that the fade goes up farther along the sides. The logo and design on the back also needs some changes to look right.

You can order a jersey below and pay with PayPal. I plan to finalize the order this Wednesday (July 7th) first thing in the morning. If you order after that, I can’t guarantee I’ll have your size. I’m ordering a few extras of common sizes of the club fit jerseys but don’t plan to for the race fit. If you want a race fit one, you’ll need to order by Wednesday morning. There’s the same sizing chart for both styles but the club fit jersey are quite a bit more roomy.

Thanks to everyone who gave their feedback on the 1st draft of the jersey design. Congratulations to Joe Grossi as the lucky winner of a free jersey!
