Last Saturday I had planned on doing the RMCC 200k brevet. Over the last couple weeks I’ve realized how much stuff I have to do around the house and how I need to spend time with the family since I spent so much time training for RAAM. My longest ride since RAAM had been under 2 hours.
I started thinking about just riding from my house and joining up with the brevet since it came south from Castle Rock and 40 miles into the brevet was about 20 miles from my house. It turned out Julie needed me home in the afternoon to watch the girls so I wouldn’t have time to do the brevet from Castle Rock.
I left my house at 6:30 and the brevet left at 7:00 I figured that would give me more than enough to start riding backwards on the course to find the brevet riders. I got to where I intersected the course in 1:40. I figured I’d meet the riders coming the other way soon since I didn’t push that hard and they lead group is always hammering. I rode for quite a while and didn’t see anyone. I started thinking it must have been canceled or I had the wrong day.
I finally saw 1 guy riding and he had extra bottles in his pockets like he was on a long ride but didn’t seem to be going nearly fast enough to be in the lead. I finally saw a couple more guys. The Grand Loop 300k scheduled for July 8th was canceled due to dangerous thunderstorms because it spends a long time above 10,000 feet. I had seen an e-mail about it possibly being rescheduled to Saturday but didn’t see anything definite and forgot about it. I think only 6 riders showed up for the 300k. I rode with a couple of them for a little while but pretty much rode by myself.
I got in 105 miles with 5151 feet of climbing and an average speed of 16.1. I didn’t push hard but my leg wasn’t too bad. I still had tightness in my hip and IT band from RAAM injury but nothing painful. It actually was the worst around mile 40 and then got slightly better instead of getting worse.
