Bears in the Woods? There’s an App for That

January 19th, 2010

One of the tips for staying safe while hiking in bear country is to wear bells. Unless they’re startled, protecting young or guarding food, most bears prefer to avoid humans. The bells give the bears time to move out of the way without feeling threatened. Fortunately every time I’ve seen a bear on the trail they’ve been in a hurry to get away from me.

Now there’s a high tech way to alert bears. The ScareBear Trail Companion iPhone app gives the option of bear bells, rocks in a tin can or hands clapping to alert bears that you’re coming. If you do encounter a bear, mountain lion or other wildlife you can tap to use an air horn sound to scare them. The app costs 99 cents.

I was curious about the app so I paid my 99 cents and downloaded it. I don’t know if the app really requires it but it won’t install without the 3.1.2 software update. I hadn’t updated from 3.1 so I had to do the update first.

The volume of the sound is determined by the iPhone’s volume control. With the volume all the way up, it is loud enough to be bothersome for bear bells, rocks in a tin can or hand clapping. The air horn doesn’t really sound much louder than the other sounds. My dog lying in my office didn’t even bother opening his eyes. My kids can certainly scream a lot louder.

The ScareBear Trail Companion iPhone app comes with a very long disclaimer list. It includes agreeing that the app is sold as a novelty item.

I have concerns about carrying my iPhone out where it could be heard in wet or dusty conditions. Although I didn’t test how long the battery lasts with it playing, the sound does keep playing when the screen is off so I would guess it is too big of a battery strain.

My recommendation is to stick to the low tech bear bell fastened to your pack or shoes. It’ll be more reliable and easier on the ears. I guess if you do forget your bear bell, you could use the app as a backup.

No Jandals, please

January 12th, 2010
Along the Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Newspapers in New Zealand have reported that country has adopted a new common-sense outdoor safety code with tourists in mind. The code was written after many reports of poor trip planning, “such as attempting to hike in rugged terrain wearing jandals.”

My question is this: What are jandals?

After extensive research (OK, I Googled), I’ve learned that jandals are flip-flops. It seems like hapless tourists hiking in flip-flops aren’t just a problem in Colorado.

According to the New Zealand Herald newspaper, in the past year, 245 search and rescue efforts in New Zealand – about 12 percent – involved tourists.

The Herald reports a police spokesman said, “We hear stories of visitors attempting the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in jandals while others don’t carry supplies because they assume there’s a shop on the Heaphy [Track]. Rather than be the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff, we want to help ensure that all visitors don’t get into trouble in the first place.”

Among the code’s messages, designed for NZ trampers (that’s hikers), are tips for planning trips, leaving word of destination and return times, knowing about impending weather, knowing physical limits and taking sufficient supplies.

Top 10 Most Used Gear in 2009

December 30th, 2009

UpaDowna and Mud, Sweat and Beers have posted their most used gear of 2009. I really liked their posts so here are my top 10.

2000 Specialized M2 StumpJumper Mountain Bike

This bike has seen more abuse than any bike should have to endure and it keeps on taking it. I’ve finished in the top 20 overall at the Leadville 100 and won an Expert 30-34 Mountain States Cup race on it. I’ve also done plenty of suffering and trying to just keep moving on it. I’ll be honest though that I hope to upgrade my ride in 2010.

Garmin Edge 705

My bike may be old but I got a cool new Garmin Edge 705 this year. I didn’t do any rides where I had no idea where I was going but on some rides in Moab and other places I used the maps to double check that I wasn’t off route. I still haven’t used nearly all of it’s capabilities.

Black Diamond Cosmo Headlamp

My Black Diamond Cosmo headlamp is a few years old. It isn’t nearly as bright as my Petzel halogen headlamp. It’s bright enough for nearly everything and doesn’t blind me hiking on snow at night. The batteries also last over 30 hours instead of 3. Not only do I use my headlamp for night hiking and around camp, I use it a lot around the house and yard.

Sidi Dominator Mountain Bike Shoes

The Sidi Dominator mountain bike shoes have been my shoe choice both on and off-road for the last several years. Because I have short, wide feet I use the Mega version. They’re stiff enough to be efficient and spread the force over the feet and still are comfortable.

CamelBak Rogue Hydration Pack

My 70 ounce Camelbak Rogue hydration pack gets a lot of use. 70 ounces plus water bottles is enough water for most rides or at least gets me to where I can refill. It also has enough carrying space so I don’t have to over stuff my jersey pockets. For rides I need more water or carrying capacity, I use the Camelbak Blowfish.

Pearl Izumi Therma Fleece Arm Warmers

Living in Colorado means that there’s a chance of needing something to keep warm. Even a hot day can turn cold at altitude when a thunderstorm moves in. That’s when I reach for my arm warmers.

Pearl Izumi Fleece Knee Warmers

Knee warmers are the perfect companion to arm warmers. Some people prefer leg warmers but with my short legs, knee warmers don’t leave much exposed skin.

Specialized S-Works Helmet

When I was a teenager, my Mom gave me the choice of getting a helmet or to stop riding my bike. I got a helmet but wasn’t happy wearing it. A couple years later, I broke it into 3 pieces. I haven’t felt safe riding without a helmet since then.

YakTrax

My YakTrax have been key to hiking the Manitou Incline during the winter. With fresh snow it isn’t too slippery but once we get some warm days it and Barr Trail can get very icy. Although the YakTrax work very well for traction, our sharp granite gravel cuts into them. I’m thinking I’ll replace them with the Kahtoola MICROspikes.

Olympus Stylus 1030SW Camera

I like to take photos of the great places I ride, hike and ski. I don’t want to have a bulky camera or one I’m worried about breaking. I have a nice digital SLR but I get lots of great shots with my Olympus Stylus 1030SW since I can take it anywhere. When I’m riding, I just slip it in my jersey pocket and don’t have to worry about it even if I crash. The newer Olympus cameras that are bombproof are their Stylus Tough series.

Beacon Debate Renewed

December 22nd, 2009
Mount Hood

Wikipedia Commons photo

The recent deaths of three climbers on Oregon’s Mount Hood have revived the debate over electronic locator devices. Called mountain locator units (MLUs) or personal locator beacons (PLBs), the devices attach to clothing and send out a signal that shows their location through satellite transmission.

The three climbers were on the mountain earlier this month. The body of one of them was found, but the other two were never located and rescue efforts were called off because of severe weather conditions.

Oregon lawmakers attempted to pass a law two year ago that required all Mount Hood climbers to carry the beacons, but it was defeated.

Climbers are divided over whether mandatory beacons will help save climbers. Some believe they give climbers a false sense of security and can even endanger rescuers responding to signals of lost climbers. Others carry the devices, but acknowledge they don’t save lives, but do help locate bodies.

But legislators are fired up about this again after the recent deaths. “When are you going to stop the carnage on Mount Hood?” said Jim Bernard, a Clackamas County commissioner.

Doggie Gifts

December 15th, 2009
Dog Hiking in Snow with Packs

It’s time to think about holiday gifts for your significant other – your dog.

Here’s some of my favorite outdoor gear for dogs

Cool Pooch Sport Bottle. We used to try and give our dog drinks from our Nalgene bottles, but most of the water ended up on the ground. So several years ago, we tried the Cool Pooch bottle, and now we never hike without it. Its innovative design with a plastic straw allows you to drink from the bottle and pour water into the attached water bowl for your dog to drink.

Doggles goggles. You wouldn’t think about heading out in the snow without your sunglasses. All that glare can harm your dog’s eyes, too. Doggles have fully adjustable head and chin straps and their lenses are cushioned with foam.

Lands End Dog Squall Jacket. We aren’t really into dressing up our beagle, but when the temperature drops, he starts to shiver. This practical jacket is wind- and snow-resistant, fleece-lined and easy to put on, and it’s trimmed with reflective binding.

Dog booties from Dogbooties.com  We tried to get our Lab to wear these a few years ago, and he high-stepped it around the house until he got them off his feet. But I know these things work – I’ve seen them on hard-working sled dogs in Alaska and Colorado. They come in nine colors.

REI Adventure Dog Tent. We’ve never had a tent for our dogs, but I love the idea of it. This would be perfect for a multi-day car camping trip. It weighs two pounds, five ounces, and is 45 by 37 by 31 inches.

Baby Steps to Your Dream Adventure

November 16th, 2009

I often get asked how I started doing long, exciting adventures like 10 days backpacking in the Alaska wilderness, the Leadville 100 mountain bike race, or the toughest one Race Across America (RAAM). Those that ask me don’t see how they could go from the small adventures they’ve done to something much bigger.

The answer is taking baby steps or pedaling with training wheels along the way. I had been racing nearly 10 years before I did a race over 6 hours. Even after doing 6 solo mountain bike races, I wasn’t sure I’d finish my first 500+ mile RAAM qualifier through the desert or California. I finished it and was fast enough to qualify for RAAM. I did another 3 qualifiers before taking the step up to RAAM.

If you dream of a big adventure but don’t think you’ll ever be capable of doing it, think again. It doesn’t matter if it’s climbing Everest, racing your bike across the US in RAAM or something smaller. Just find some fun, doable steps and start now. You may be surprised by what adventures you’ll have.

UltraRob.com has also grown much like my adventures. It’s grown from a small site with planned races, race results and a blog about training for RAAM into much more. Last month there were over 80,000 unique visits and 150,000 pageviews on UltraRob.com. Where will it go next? It’ll be a journey and I’m sure it’ll be baby step by baby step.

What adventure are you dreaming about doing or have already experienced by taking little steps?

Barr Trail Makes “Dangerous” List

November 9th, 2009

In its most recent issue, Backpacker magazine lists “The Ten Most Dangerous Hikes in America.” Some of the entries aren’t surprising: the brutally hot Bright Angel in the Grand Canyon, the well-named Maze in Utah.

The list also includes Barr Trail. For those who are constantly frustrated by the bad rap Barr often gets – “it’s a sidewalk;” “it’s among the easiest 14er hikes” – the idea that Barr is really a badass might be good news.

But lightning is the dangerous reason Barr made the list, and it’s always been a component in any hike on Pikes Peak.

My scariest hike on Barr occurred a few years ago during an early September thunder/snowstorm. I was leading a group of friends, all first-timers to the trail, from the summit back down to Barr Camp where we had booked the guest cabin for the night.

Storms weren’t forecast, and skies were uniformly gray when we left the summit, but about two miles down, it started snowing and thundering. When one of my friends asked innocently, “why are the (metal) trail signs humming?” I knew we were in trouble. We spread out and kept moving downhill and made it to the cabin unscathed. (That hike is forever known by my clever friends as “the day Deb tried to kill us.”)

Turns out we did a couple of things right – we started in the morning, when there is (usually) a lower risk of storms, and we spread out when the storm started. But when you’re above tree line on Pikes Peak in a lightning storm, it’s nearly impossible to make yourself follow the other conventional lightning safety tips: take off your pack and move away from it; crouch down and balance on the balls of your feet.

Instead, the impulse is to flee, which takes a while on Barr (unless you’re Matt Carpenter).

Fewer Hikers, Fewer Conservation dollars?

November 5th, 2009
Pikes Peak from Top of Manitou Incline

Recent studies have shown a decrease in strenuous outdoor nature recreation activities such as hiking and backpacking. To someone who prefers uncrowded trails, that might sound like a good thing, but a recent study in PloS One, a research report site, shows that decline might have a negative impact on conservation groups.

The study, conducted by Oliver Pegams, visiting research assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Patricia Zaradic, director of the Red Rock Institute in Pennsylvania and Peter Kareiva, chief scientist for The Nature Conservancy, showed that “the type and timing of nature experience may determine future conservation investment.”

The study showed that people who spend their time hiking or backpacking often increase their conservation contributions more than a decade later. According to the study, that translates to $200 to $300 annually per person in future contributions.

Sand and Rock

November 2nd, 2009

Every year about this time, when the mountain scenery fades from green to brown, I’m drawn to a different kind of terrain – dusty high deserts, rocky canyons, shifting sand dunes.

Fall and winter are the best times to visit these places and you’ll often have them to yourselves. Here are three of my favorites close to Colorado Springs – Paint Mines Interpretive Park, which is nearby; the Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve, which can be done on a long day trip, and Hovenweep National Monument, which can be part of a longer road trip that also includes Mesa Verde National Park.

  • Paint Mines Interpretive Park, part of the El Paso County parks system, is unlike any other park in the region. To get there, take U.S. Highway 24 east to Calhan; drive south on Yoder Road/Calhan Highway; east on Pain Mine Road, and follow the signs. The park is named for the hoodoos and spires capped in sandstone (pictured) and “painted” with clays. It’s a small park – 750 acres with four miles of trails – but you’ll want to linger and explore the maze of rock formations.
  • Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve near Mosca has the tallest dunes in North America, set dramatically against a backdrop of the Sangre de Cristos. In the summer, the dunes are crawling with visitors. In the winter, we’ve had the park all to ourselves.
  • Hovenweep National Monument near Cortez and Blanding, Utah. Mysterious rock towers and petroglyphs dot the high desert here; remnants of a culture 10,000 years old.
