CompuTrainer Races at Criterium Bicycles

Riding CompuTrainers

CompuTrainers at Carmichael Training Systems

This is last minute information for tonight but there’s 3 more Mondays in February so you can plan ahead for them. Unfortunately I just saw the info on this today.

Race with your own road bike indoors FREE! Big Mountain Adventure Racing is sponsoring the February BMAR-Criterium Computrainer Races at Criterium Bicycles every Monday evening in February.

Races begin at 6pm. The fastest racer each night gets a free BMAR SWAG bag! If you attend all four Monday events you’ll have a chance to win a 30% off BMAR race coupon!

If you’ve never ridden a CompuTrainer, who should go try them out. They have 2 different modes. In one mode it keeps your power output constant and in the other mode it changes the resistance to simulate changes in road grade. Racing uses the 2nd mode and you shift your gears to make it easier or harder just like on the road.

I haven’t seen the setup at Criterium but I have a CompuTrainer and I’ve also done the power classes at the CTS Endurance Sports Club. A couple nights during the classes I took at CTS we did some racing. It’s certainly a way to make indoor training less boring. Of course with the weather we’ve been having there hasn’t been much of a need to ride inside.

2011 100 Miles of Nowhere

May 5th, 2011

100 Miles of Nowhere

The Fat Cyclist is once again putting on the 100 Miles of Nowhere to raise money for LiveStrong. He announced yesterday that he had convinced Johan Bruyneel to ride it too. Official entry had closed but he has opened entry again until 6:00 PM EDT today (Thursday May 5th). This time though the money will go to World Bicycle Relief.

The 100 Miles of Nowhere literally means riding a bike 100 miles no where. Fatty though wants to include everyone so it’s OK to ride less than 100 miles, ride around the block instead of on a trainer or run around your back yard for a few hours. The official ride day is Saturday, June 4 but you can also pick a day. You can find all the details on how to register and ride rules here.

I’d also say if you don’t want the t-shirt and number plate or miss the registration cut-off, just donate directly to LiveStrong, World Bicycle Relief or a charity of your choosing. However you do it you’ll be in good company since over 500 people signed up the first day registrations was initially open. Just accept the challenge of going no where.

Although I rode 100 miles in my garage on my Computrainer in 2009, I plan on riding outside this year somewhere near downtown Colorado Springs. I’ve been too busy this year and haven’t done a ride over 30 miles but I’ll try to make it 100 miles. If you’re in the area, come join me for all or part of the ride.

Very Cold Weekend

February 20th, 2006

Tuesday it was 60 degrees which was probably because of the wind in front of a cold front. Wednesday it was cold and snowed a little and it just kept getting colder. Friday morning it was 1 degree and by Saturday morning it was -12 degrees. The high was 10 degrees.

I planned on riding a couple hours on the mag trainer. It ended up only being an hour because it took me longer than I thought it would to solder ends on the cables I ran for my CompuTrainer through the walls when we were remodeling. My computer is in a different room from where I ride and with little kids it just doesn’t work to string cables across the floor which is what I used to do. There haven’t been many cold days so I haven’t bothered with getting it set up.

Sunday it was -5 degrees in the morning. The only time I had to ride was in the morning so I couldn’t wait for it to warm up outside. I managed to ride for 3 hours on the mag trainer watching last year’s Giro. Even three hours was a stretch for me. Many years ago I did a 5 hour trainer ride and don’t have plans to do it again. I may be forced to if we get several nasty days since I’m training for RAAM. I checked out the page for the UMCA Indoor Challenge and some people are putting in insane hours inside. One guy has put in two 20 hour rides on the trainer. You’re allowed 5 minutes off the bike per hour and every 6 hours a 15 minute break although that time doesn’t count as part of the ride time.

At least riding the trainer Sunday motivated me to finish setting up my CompuTrainer. I plan on getting the Logitech MX5000 keyboard and mouse since it uses Bluetooth that gives about a 30 foot range. I just found today that TigerDirect has a rebate on it. The RAAM website has the CompuTrainer files for the complete 2006 RAAM course so maybe I should start riding it. One of the reasons I’m into riding my bike is because I love being outside so I hope I don’t have to ride inside too much.
