Congratulations to T-Shirt Winners

August 18th, 2010

UltraRob.com T-Shirts

Thanks to everyone who guessed times for the Leadville 100 winner and my time.

David guessed I’d DNF at Twin Lakes inbound and was the closest so he gets a t-shirt. I actually turned around on the Columbine Mine climb since my asthma flared up from the sagebrush on Pipeline.

No one picked Levi Leipheimer to win. David and Mario were really close on Dave Wiens’ finishing time and Travis was close on JHK‘s time but unfortunately neither one was the winner.

Since no picked Levi, I used random.org to pick a winner of the 2nd t-shirt. It goes to Mario.

If you didn’t win a t-shirt but want one you can order them for $15. The front has the small logo and the back has the big logo for both colors.

Also the UltraRob.com jerseys are in and some are still available. Click the jersey images below to see a larger photo of them. They are $50 each.

Shipping is a flat $3 no matter how many t-shirts or jerseys you order.

2010 Leadville 100 Photos

August 16th, 2010

UltraRob at 2010 Leadville 100

David from 303Cycling was at the bottom of Powerline outbound Saturday during the Leadville 100. He got the great shot above of me. He took over 1100 pictures and has them organized them by bib number. You can check out the rest of his great Leadville 100 photos here. You can purchase them for very reasonable prices.

Rob O’Dea is a pro photographer that was on a moto shooting photos. He has an album of the leaders posted. He expects to have photos of many of the other racers online by Wednesday at the latest. He takes incredible photos but in the past he’s been fairly pricey. I guess compared to the cost of doing the race, his photos aren’t that much.

I also posted a few Leadville 100 photos on Saturday.

2010 Leadville 100

August 14th, 2010

Leadville 100 Start

Levi Leipheimer set a new course record for the Leadville 100 today. He finished in 6:16:37 to break Lance Armstrong’s record from last year of 6:28.

Official Results for Top 5 Overall :

1. Levi Leipheimer – 6:16:37.2
2. Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski – 6:25:21.4
3. Todd Wells – 6:30:31.1
4. Dave Wiens – 6:33:54.1
5. Jeremiah Bishop – 6:33:54.4

Complete Results

I had doubts that I was in good enough shape this year to make the 12 hour time cut-off but at the 30 mile mark I was on pace to be a little under 12 hours. A few miles later my asthma started flaring up. I kept going for a little ways but by mile 46 on the Columbine Mine climb it was painful for me to breathe even though I had stopped several times to use my inhaler. I ended turning back down the hill instead of going to the top.

Make Leadville 100 Prediction, Win T-Shirt

August 13th, 2010

UltraRob.com T-Shirts

I’m up at Leadville today getting ready for the Leadville 100. Guess the winner and their finish time and if you pick the winner and are closest to their time you’ll win an UltraRob.com t-shirt. Although Lance Armstrong has said he won’t race there’s plenty of other potential winners to pick from. Some of them are Dave Wiens, Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski, Levi Leipheimer, Matt Shriver, Jeremiah Bishop, Todd Wells and Alban Lakata and here’s the complete Leadville 100 entrant list.

You can also win a t-shirt for predicting at what mile I drop out or what my finish time is. Here are some hints on guessing my time. I weigh 50 lbs more than when I finished in 8:18 in 2003. I’m also even 20 lbs heavier than when I did 11:21 in 2008. I started training earlier this year than the 4th of July like I did 2 years ago but my fitness was really slow coming around.

To win a t-shirt, you must submit your guess by tomorrow’s 6:30 AM start time.

Weekend in Leadville

August 9th, 2010

Lance Armstrong on Leadville 100 Course

This weekend we went camping near Leadville at 11,000 feet. With the Leadville 100 this weekend, I wanted to spend some more time at altitude. A couple weeks ago, I slept in the back of our van at 11,700 feet and I’ve done a few rides at altitude this summer but I don’t think I’ve spent as much time at altitude as normal.

I had also replaced several worn out parts on my bike plus switched to new tires so I wanted to give them a try on the Leadville 100 course. I rode most of what I wanted to see of the Leadville 100 course when I was there a couple weeks ago but I didn’t ride Powerline. Since I’ve been sick and didn’t want to push it, I had my wife drop me off at Carter Summit. I rode from there around the back side of Turquoise Lake, up Sugarloaf, down Powerline and over to the Fish Hatchery.

Just after I hit the pavement after Powerline, I saw Lance Armstrong, Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski and someone else I didn’t recognize coming toward me. I looked back and saw they stopped at some vehicles so I turned around. Lance was friendly and let me take a photo with him. He said this week was really busy for him so he would decide this week for sure whether he’s racing. He also said it’s been a while since he’s been fast. JHK said it was a really tough course but it sounded like he’ll be bringing his A game.

Since it was Boom Days in Leadville we checked it out. It seemed to be mainly booths selling trinket stuff but there were some mining competitions. I would liked to have seen them doing the rock drilling but when we were there they were just seeing how fast someone could fill an ore cart with gravel.

Sunday morning was the burro races. We didn’t stick around for them to come back to town. They had a few burros that they were letting people race for about a block and back. My girls wanted to do it. The 5 year old was very disappointed because they wouldn’t let her do it because she just had flip flops. They let my 7 year old do it but I had to do it with her. Normally I avoid running but it was fun pulling a burro down the street and we won our group.

Leadville Trail 100 Sold

August 6th, 2010

Lifetime Fitness Founder and Others at Top of Columbine Climb

27 years after starting the Leadville 100 running race, Ken Chlouber has grown the Leadville Trail 100 family of races to 8 and include the 100 mile mountain bike race. He’s now in his early 70’s. Merilee Maupin, the race co-director, isn’t young anymore either and it’s been a tough year for her with the sudden death of her daughter earlier this year.

Over the past few months, I’ve had fleeting thoughts a couple times about what would happen if Ken and Merilee were no longer running the Leadville 100. I didn’t expect it would be this soon but yesterday it was announced Life Time Fitness now owns the Leadville Trail 100 races. At this point I really don’t know what this means for the races but I’m sure a publicly traded company won’t run them the same as a wild west miner. I hope that Ken and Merilee will continue to be at least somewhat involved for a couple years.

I know of Life Time Fitness for their gyms but they also have an athletic events division. From looking at their site, it looks like they promote a small number of events in the Chicago and Minneapolis areas.

Below is the press release.

LEADVILLE, Colo., August 05, 2010 – A sold-out field of more than 1,500 riders, including some of the sport’s best professionals, will take to the hills of Colorado for the Life Time Fitness Leadville Trail 100 Race Across the Sky August 14. The event, which is now owned and produced by Life Time Fitness, is the original 100-mile (160 km) ultra-distance mountain bike event, beginning and ending in the heart of Leadville, Colorado, located 100 miles west of Denver.

Participants from 48 states and 21 countries will race on single- and double-track dirt roads that consist of steep climbs and descents ranging from 9,000 to 12,620 feet along the 52-mile out-and-back course. Based on past course results, approximately 65% of riders are expected to finish within the event’s 12-hour time limit and receive the coveted Leadville Trail 100 silver and gold belt buckle.

The Life Time Fitness Leadville Trail 100 will be led by major stars of the sport, including six-time Leadville Trail 100 Champion, Dave Wiens, who was defeated in 2009 by seven-time Tour de France Champion, Lance Armstrong. Both will be joined this year by Pro cyclist, Levi Leipheimer, along with some of the best mountain bikers in the world.

“We are excited to add this renowned series to our growing Athletic Events portfolio,” said Ken Cooper, vice president, Life Time Fitness Athletic Events. “With our growing presence in Colorado and nationally, the Leadville Trail 100 supports our commitment to provide Life Time Fitness members and sports enthusiasts with a wide range of world-class event opportunities. Furthermore, we are proud to be a part of the Leadville community, which is a significant part of what makes this event series so special.”

Ken Chlouber, founder of the Leadville Trail 100 Race Series added, “I am very pleased that Life Time Fitness will continue the long tradition of endurance events and sportsmanship that the Leadville Trail 100 Race Series established back in 1983. We are excited that Life Time will bring added resources and expertise to take yet another giant step forward in the notoriety and exposure of these events in support of the local community.”

Prior to assuming ownership of the Leadville Trail 100 Series, Life Time Fitness served as title sponsor of the event in 2008 and 2009.

Life Time Fitness also is proud to present the Leadville Trail 100 10K Run on August 15, beginning at 12:00 p.m. The run features paved and dirt roads on an out-and-back course that spans the first and last 5K of the Life Time Fitness Leadville Trail 100 Run course. All 10K finishers receive a commemorative cup.

Several of the greatest endurance events in America are presented under the Life Time Fitness Leadville Trail 100 Race Series banner, including:

Leadville 100 Course Conditions

July 30th, 2010

Leadville 100 Columbine Climb

Tuesday afternoon I drove up to Leadville and rode the first part of the Leadville 100 course. I rode from the start, up the St. Kevins climb and out to the pavement at Carter summit. I then rode back and took the Boulevard back into town like finishing on race day.

It had rained just before I got there so there were puddles of water and some mud. Other than being wet the course looked in normal condition. St. Kevins had some small gullies like it normally does.

Tuesday night I drove up to the Leadville mining district to sleep at altitude. I found a nice level spot to park the van at 11,700 feet with a view of the Leadville lights below and crawled into the back for some sleep. I think it was raining every time I woke up during the night. There was just a little drizzle when I got up in the morning but it was still very cloudy.

By the time I drove down to Twin Lakes and got ready to ride the Columbine Climb, the sun was starting to break through the clouds. With my lack of fitness and the extra weight I’m carrying, it was a slow, painful climb to the top. The sun came out nicely and I hung out at the top at the turn around for a little while enjoying the views.

The upper section has recently been smoothed out and is in the best condition I’ve ever seen it. Downpours in the next couple weeks could wash it out some but I still expect it’ll be in better than normal condition. Carmichael Training Systems posted a helmet cam video of the top of the Columbine descent from their camp last weekend.

I didn’t ride Powerline while I was there but Arlyn Asch posted a video of his recent ride of it. From the video, it looks like it’s in typical conditions with a few ruts to look out for. You can also read Arlyn’s write up of the rest of his Leadville 100 course preview.

I saw a few other mountain bikers training for the Leadville 100. I had some nice chats with them. I saw Brian from Pikes Peak Sports riding with his friend Wade who is racing. I blew by them descending Columbine and didn’t recognize Brian. I ended up seeing them again along US 24 and giving them a ride back to their cars.

2010 Leadville 100 MTB Entrant List

July 25th, 2010
Leadville 100 Start

The 2010 Leadville 100 mountain bike entrant list has been posted. Once again they allowed more racers this year. There are 1557 entrants but I heard they received over 10,000 entries.

Lance Armstrong and Dave Wiens are to be back. Other cycling stars such as Levi Leipheimer, Tinker Juarez, Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski, Ned Overend and Rebecca Rusch are on the list.

A big change for this year is that only the top 100 from last year have their bib number the same as their finishing place the year before. In the past it was easy to look at others numbers and get a feel for how well you were doing.

It’s only 3 weeks until the Leadville 100 and only in the last couple weeks has my fitness gotten to the point that I have been able to get in good, long rides. I’ve been struggling with my weight the last few years and I’m even more overweight this year. It’s going to be tough for me to get a finish this year but I’ll line up and see what happens.

Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Entry eBay Auction

May 14th, 2010
Leadville 100 - Bottom of Columbine Climb

If you didn’t get picked in the Leadville 100 lottery and you still want to do the race after the felony charges drama this week, here’s a chance to get in and help a charity. A Leadville 100 entry is being auctioned on eBay to benefit Arts Street. Normally you shouldn’t buy a Leadville 100 entry on eBay but the race organizers son, Cole, is on the board of directors for Arts Street and is a legitimate entry.

Currently there’s only a day left on the auction. The price is at $521 but the reserve hasn’t been met. Over the last few weeks they sold an additional 25 entries for $2,275 each to benefit the LT100 Legacy Foundation so I’d guess the reserve is a fair amount higher.

Arts Street is a 10 year-old non-profit youth program in Denver that creates opportunities for the youth of Colorado. The opportunities provided are designed to foster the inspiration and education of these youth to become tomorrow’s professionals – supporting the workforce needs. This is achieved by developing and implementing highly diversified career-based, educational programs that incorporate real-world learning, artistic expression and creative thinking.

More On Leadville 100 Felony Charges

May 13th, 2010
Lance Armstrong at Leadville 100 Start

The news about Katie Brazelton giving her Leadville 100 entry to Wendy Lyall and both of them being charged with criminal impersonation has spread outside of the mountain bike world. There a good post on the Ex-Pat Ex-Lawyer blog with what lead up to the charges.

In a letter to the Lake County Sheriff, Leadville 100 organizer Ken Chlouber asked for prosecution on theft of services for the $250 in race fees, $225 in awards, plus racer services, including aid stations, security, and a pre-race banquet. That would be much less severe than the criminal impersonation felony that DA Hurlbert charged them with. It seems that Katie Brazelton may have already lost her job over the incident.

As I said I think that cheating to get into the race is serious but worse in this case because of Wendy finishing 2nd in Katie’s age group. Still being charged with a felony is overblown for something like this.

Some people are complaining that Ken doesn’t enforce his rules consistently. We own an old mining claim in Lake County close to Leadville and we always say it’s still the wild, wild west there. It’s not just that Ken runs the Leadville 100 that way. Even so about 10 times as many people wanted to do the race this year as are allowed in.

The Leadville 100 entry lottery isn’t totally a lottery. Some number of riders appear to get picked and the rest get drawn in the lottery. I know riders that have used a friend’s address in Leadville so they’d get picked. Leadville is small enough that Ken and whoever else does the preferred picking probably know when that is the case but the riders have still gotten into the race.
