It’s Warren Miller time

November 4th, 2010

John Morrison in Antarctica

Four words: Penguins, pow pow and polar bears.  Or is that five words?  Whatever.

It’s one way to describe this year’s Warren Miller extravaganza.

Called “Wintervention,” this year’s ski film focuses on ski and board addicts who throw aside jobs, responsibilities, families, and finances in the pursuit of snow. Sure, the plot is a little thin, but it works because, after all, it’s November.

If you haven’t gotten tickets, you still can – it’s Friday and Saturday at the Pikes Peak Center (go to www.pikespeakcenter.com for more info). If you aren’t local, you can get dates for other locations here.

And if you haven’t been daydreaming about powder, this film will fuel your imagination and make you check the calendar for possible “sick days.” Vail Resorts and Telluride are featured prominently in this year’s show, but don’t look for freebies there – ticket holders will go home with buy one/get one offers at Steamboat, Winter Park and Crested Butte, along with a coupon for Colorado Ski & Golf.

This is the 61st year for WM, but there’s no footage of Warren or his distinctive voice.  Miller sold his company in the 1980s to Warren Miller Entertainment.  Now, after considerable legal wrangling, the two are separate entities, with WME only owning Miller’s name in ski films and magazines and Miller himself relaunching the Warren Miller Company.

But that’s boring.  Let’s talk “Wintervention.”

As in previous years, the film crew travels the world, starting in Antarctica and ending in Norway, 500 miles from the North Pole. In between, there are jaunts to Austria and British Columbia, with a long visit at Vail Resorts and a loving tribute to Telluride.  Colorado’s ski legends feature prominently, with Chris Anthony and Chris Davenport getting the most screen time.  And Lindsey Vonn even makes an appearance, answering the burning question: what do ski racers do when they aren’t training?

You say you’re not a big mountain kind of person?  Heli-skiing isn’t on your to-do list?  You’ve never skied anywhere except Colorado?  Go for the penguins.

Good News for Fifth-Graders

July 5th, 2010

The Colorado Ski Country fifth-grade passport has always been one of the best deals around – three days of free skiing at each Ski Country resort for all Colorado fifth-graders.

Now it’s even better, with a new perk – one free ski lesson, including rental equipment, for all passport holders.  Watch for applications in the fall on the Ski Country website

Gift Card Giveaway Winners

December 24th, 2007

A big thanks to everyone who participated in my gift card giveaway. I had planned to start it a few days earlier but had too many other things going on. It seems everyone else was also busy with Christmas. This gave the ones who took the time very good odds.

First here are the ones that helped spread the word about the giveaway.

Random.org picked ProfessionalJackass.com as the winner.

The giveaway was really about getting feedback and I only got 2 comments. That gave each entrant a 50% chance of winning something extra for Christmas. Both gave excellent feedback and it looks like I need to work on improving the search matching.

For this one, Random.org picked NannaBee.

Congratulations to ProfessionalJackass.com and NannaBee! They get their choice of gift cards from this page.

I’ll probably do something similar in a couple months when people aren’t so busy so keep an eye out.

Last Day to Enter to Win $50 Gift Card

December 23rd, 2007

Just a reminder that today is the last day to enter to win a $50 gift card. All the details are here and the list of gift cards is here. Everybody is busy with Christmas shopping so you have a really good chance of winning.

I’m not going to be picky about the exact time for what is tonight. Any comment that’s submitted by the time I check in the morning will get counted. I’m not exactly a morning person so it won’t be too early.

2 Chances to Win a $50 Gift Card in Time for Christmas

December 18th, 2007

I’ve been working on a cycling and outdoor gear search on this site for a little over a year. I have a lot more things I want to do with it plus some things need fixing. With my limited time, it will be a while before I get to some of the things.

Here’s your chance to help me and win a $50 gift card. So that I can spend my time working on things you think would make the biggest difference, I’m going to give away a gift card in return for suggestions.. Look around, search for something you’re dreaming about for Christmas. Then write a comment on this post with what you’d like added or what needs improving.

I want to provide incentive to provide good suggestions so I’m not going to award the gift card totally randomly. I also don’t want to spend a lot of time agonizing over which is the best comment. I’m going to pick a handful of the best comments and then pick one of them randomly.

Comments must be submitted by Sunday night, December 23rd. Make sure that I can easily find your e-mail address if you link to your site or that you put it in your comments. Feel free to use name[]mysite.com or something so your e-mail doesn’t get grabbed by the spam bots. I’ll announce a winner sometime on Monday, Christmas Eve. If you win, you can pick any gift card from this page. I prefer you pick one that can be e-mailed but I’ll have one mailed as long as you live in the US.

A 2nd way to win a $50 gift card is to help spread the word about this giveaway and the cycling and outdoor gear search. You’ll need to have a blog or website for this one. Write something and link to both this post and the cycling and outdoor gear search page.

Once you’ve linked, either leave a comment here on where to find them or send me an e-mail. I’m going to end this contest a day earlier than the other one so your readers will have time to enter. That means Saturday night, December 22nd.

For the 2nd giveaway, I’ll pick a winner totally randomly. The winner will be announced at the same time as the other giveaway. The winner will also get the same choice of gift cards.

Cool Mountain Biking Videos

September 6th, 2007

Here are some cool mountain bike videos. A couple other videos I’ve posted in the past are also making their way around again. They are Jumping the Tour de France on a Mountain bike and a Trials Riding Video.

September is one of my favorite months for riding but a lot of people are gearing up for skiing and snowboarding. The Teame Geard-Up Blog has also posted the top 5 snowboarding crash videos (via The Adventure Blog).

The Teame Geard-Up Blog has posted what they consider the top 5 mountain bike crash videos. Here’s number 5 and the pain factor keeps going up. I’ve seen at least one of them before.
