Easy traveling airbag pack An airbag could save your life in the backcountry, but first you have to get it there in good working order. There's a lot of confusion surrounding flying with a fully charged nitrogen, air, argon, or carbon dioxide canister. Although most airlines will let you check a traditional airbag canister, you don't want to leave your backcountry safety up to the discretion of a pilot who may have no idea what an avalanche airbag is. Black Diamond designed the JetForce pack to make flying with and using a ready to go airbag easier and less confusing. The JetForce pack uses a battery pack and a computer controlled fan to inflate its 200 litre airbag in less than 3 seconds. Computer controlled protection by Pieps Inflation for most airbag systems comes courtesy of compressed gasses and a rapid release mechanism. The ABS uses a small, explosive primer. The Black Diamond JetForce uses a computer controlled fan. Pieps, a trusted name in avalanche beacons, designed the electronics. You're ready to go as long as the battery is charged. The JetForce uses a unique inflation process. When the trigger is pulled, the bag quickly inflates. After the initial inflation the fan activates every 30s or so to keep the bag inflated. After 3 minutes, the fan reverses course and sucks the air out of the bag. In the off chance that you've been buried, the deflated bag will create an empty cavity around your head so you can breath until help arrives. The airbag itself remains effective even with a 6 gash in it. Practice makes perfect The Black Diamond JetForce is the only airbag system on the market that's cheap and easy to practice with. Systems using pressurized canisters must be refilled after use. The JetForce has no such requirement, and the bag is good for 150 inflations for most other bags this number is around 50. You could deploy the JetForce 100 times in your living room, for fun or practice, and still have 50 more to go before the bag is compromised. No need to refill anything, either. Just make sure the batteries are charged. What consumables The battery is rechargeable and should last about 2 years, according to Black Diamond. Replacement batteries will be available soon.
