The new design makes it possible to have a crankset that has no BCD standard, so you can run a 5034 compact set up to a 3239 standard ring combo, or anything in betwen, on the same crank. This is truly revolutionary and means it's no longer necessary to change out your cranks if you want to change your front end gearing. The Hollowtech II construction gives it maximum stiffness, but sheds a few grams over the old version. This crankset comes with mid compact 5236T gearing that gives you the best of both worlds. The 36T little ring makes the hills feel a little smaller, while the 52T big ring gives you plenty of power for low cadence, high wattage outputs.
