There’s some very sad news in the ultracycling world today. Five time Race Across America winner, Jure Robic, has died from a collision with a car. I haven’t found much information yet on the accident but according to an article I found he died at the scene of the crash. Here’s a link to the Google translation of the article.
Robic was known for how little sleep he could get by on in RAAM. In 2004 it was reported that in almost 9 days he had slept a total of 8 hours. The RAAM movie Bicycle Dreams showed how hard he raced.
He’s married and if I remember correctly he has one child. I pray for his family through this terrible tragedy.

[…] More at Ultra Rob. Jure Robic has won the Race Across American five times, a record in the men’s solo category. He’s featured in Stephen Aurbach’s movie “Bicycle Dreams,” which follows the 2008 RAAM. […]
This is a tragic end to a brilliant and inspirational rider. I rode RAAM in 2005 as part of the winning 8-man corporate Team Insight. I was at the finish line when Robic arrived in first place and I have just finished looking at those photos once again. I never had the honour of actually shaking his hand, but I remember being simply awestruck seeing him finish and I have followed his accomplishments from that time onward. RIP.

So sad to see this story. I also rode RAAM in 2005, on a 4 man team. Jure has always inspired me. Prayers for his family.
Unbelievable tragedy, our country is in shock. His will of steel, his ability to succeed in the most non human conditions,he seemed like out from this planet. He lived for the cycling and showed us all that will can break the strongest mountain to pieces. Not just on the bike but in life as well. The Only one, unreplaceable,Great, great man…Still impossible to realize you’re gone…RIP,Jure
